question about b6 to bp swap

Post by asimpson719 »

im on the hunt for a 1.6 dohc mx3 and once i find the one i want im also planning on doing a bp swap from a escrot gt.

but my question was if i plan on rebuilding the engine with forged internals is it still benificial to swap in a bp or with the re build

will the b6 be just as strong as the bp

i don't know but just guessing I think you can make the b6 equal the bp... but don't count me as right... lol

though personally I'm planning to rebuild the BP so it has even more power lol

The main thing stronger from a B6 dohc is the rods and that's if it was a B6T to begin with. You will get more of a balance between hp and torque from the BP since it is a larger displacement. The stock BP block will handle over 200hp without changing any internals and for more power you'd look at BPT cams from a gtx or gtr 323, rods and pistons from the same to drop the compression down to a more turbo friendly 8.2:1 or you could use B6T rods in the BP which are the strongest. You'd also want to swap to a g series trans so you arent changing transmissions almost as often as you change oil. With that kind of setup, I know guys are running over 20psi of boost with ease. Even a stock BP will handle decent amounts of boost, the key is tuning (injectors, ecu, vaf) and keeping your air-fuel ratio in a safe area. Most of the time it's not boost that will kill an engine, it's running lean while in boost that will kill it.

If you're going to BP swap, get a SOHC MX3.

BP is definately a better platform. It was a Miata motor, as well as many other GT model cars, so the aftermarket support is there.
Now with Moderator power!

Black '93 BP RS - wrecked, parted, scrapped.
Green GS - Sold.
Black GS - Summer DD/Race car - Fancy KLZE
Red GS - K8-ATX -> MTX-KLDE - Frakencar. Scrapped
White GS - Rusty. Parts. Scrapped
1997 BMW M3 - my summer baby
2002 BMW 325Xi - sold
2003 Forester Xti - EJ20K swapped.

why sohc? just because it will be less expensive or easier to find?

The SOHC is almost plug and play, the harness is 99% identical to the Escort GT BP
and Protege BP engine. Just make sure you get a large nose crank.

If your going to consider swapping get the BP as stated above because the Miata used
this engine and there is a whack load of aftermarket/turbo parts. If you can't find a SOHC
from 93 you can also swap into a 94 providing its OBD1. I have not swapped into an OBD2
MX (1995+) so I cant be of any immediate help with wiring.

There is nothing wrong with the B6T but you may have trouble finding pieces for it as it was
not a very common motor to find here in North America.
