Clutch problem - MX6 MX3 Probe - are they the same?

So my friend is doing a ZE swap but he ordered an Exedy clutch from a 2.5L car. He has the 1.8L stock gearbox.

Anyways - I thought they were all the same and you could put any clutch kit from a 2.5L in there? Are the pressure plates different or something?

The problem is that his mechanic is saying that it won't fit properly. The dumb exedy site also seems to list different part numbers for the Eunos 30x (MX3) and Probe but aren't they the same gearbox. The 626 and MX6 also seem to show different part numbers but that's stupid also as I know those are the same gearbox.

Any ideas? Is the mechanic retarded?

hmm I'm running Spec clutch made for mx6/probe on my k8 gearbox, onto a fidanza fly ticketed as being probe/mx6. They like to use our k8 flys as a performance upgrade, so really everything has been mixed and matched. Confused mechanic or wrong part I'd say. Specifically what doesn't fit?

Also they will be different parts#s because the probe holds more torque than the mx clutch.

r u sure the clutch is made for the 1993+ 2.5 KL engine?? the 2.5 clutch disc, pressure plate and all will fit on the K8 tranny and K8 flywheel. its all the same stuff. only difference is the 2.5 disc is like 10mm larger than the K8 disc but this will in NO WAY affect it at all. its all the same spline count

The clutch in question is a Exedy MZK-6963 HD "heavy duty one"

I'm not sure the part number, but my new clutch is an Exedy made for the 93-97' 2.5L MX-6. Works perfectly. Pre 93' would be different I believe.

I googled MZK-6963 and it came right up with a 1994 probe 2.5L v6 and a 1992 626 2.5l v6... with a MZD007US clutch disc.

when I do a search for a mazda mx-3 on the exedy.au site I have to select mazda then eunos and then there are 2 choices for 30x: the bottom one has the same clutch disc as the MZK-6963

Variant 30X, EC1081, 1.8 Ltr V6, K8
Year 1912 to 1993:
Size, Spline OD & No. of Teeth 215 X 24.3 X 22
MZK-6598
Clutch Disc MZD026U

Variant 30X, EC1082, 1.8 Ltr V6, K8
Year 1993...
Size, Spline OD & No. of Teeth 225 X 24.3 X 22
MZK-6540
Clutch Disc MZD007US

So unless the clutch disc was marked wrong and you have the wrong one...then exactly how does the clutch not fit according to the mechanic? too big, too small, wrong spline count?

there must be a difference between the gearbox in the 1993 cutoff date, pretty sure my car is the earlier model due to not having ABS

it could be because there is a difference in size 225 vs 215... I've never heard of a variation but it could be a weird one off eunos 30x thing...

looks like the klze will have a stock k8 clutch for a while. Anyone tried this?

Ya, and you better take it easy cause it won't last. You're using a clutch made to handle 115ft-lbs of torque on a motor with 165ft-lbs....

I'm using an Mx-6 Bully clutch, and I've got an Mx-6 Clutchmaster waiting for the new motor.

When I ordered my Bully, they actually sent one for a 2.2L Mx-6

The Probe/MX-6/626 had the 2.5L V6 only from 1993 and up...the start of the second gen. 88-92 was the first gen with either the 2.2L 4cyl (turbo) or the Vulcan 3.0L V6 in the Probe...totally different drivetrains.

Some aftermarket manufacturers make and use the same clutch for both the K8 and the KL, while others will make one for the 1.8 and another for the 2.5L, but it's been said many times, the 2.5L clutches work fine, and that the K8 flywheel is a common mod amungst Probe/Mx-6'ers.

On those posted specs, the size looks like it's literally 10mm larger, while looking into the part numbers, the MZD026U is listed for the 1.8 Mx-3, while the MZD007US is listed for the 2.5 Mx-6

Here in Australia my MX6 is a 1991 and it's a 2.5L V6. The 2.2L stopped around 1990 for us. http://www.exedy.com.au/ClutchFinder.as ... 45&client=" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As you can see there on the exedy site they have it listed from 1991. Kind of strange, it seems that in another thread, I read that there are two versions of the tranny. It must be an odd thing for the 30x/MX3 only I guess.

If it's physically different it makes you wonder how it can fit fine on any K series engine.

That is absolutely the first I've ever heard of that. I can't believe that no one ever noticed or mentioned it before.
