im pretty sure that your just not getting enough amperage to the starter from all the way back in the trunk.

Those cables should be fine. LOL the 0/1 is often used in large DC power systems in most telecom plants. It's one of the smaller guages used out there, but for the car.. it is massive. Are your cables running to the starter or your sterio first? Also that nasty looking tape splice to the factory feed looks a little iffy.

the power wire is running from the starter and the fuse box and for the nasty looking tape splice to the factory is all soldered together...

I have the same guage wires, and grounded mine to the bumper bolts (The nuts in the rear bulkhead). I sanded the terminal, and the bulkhead.

I put the battery in the back, and ran the + wire to the starter, and just connected the other wires that went to the + terminal to the strater, also. I can get a pic, if you need it.
before that, I connected the + wire from the battery to the original terminal clamp (still in it's place), and wrapped it all up, so it wouldn't ground.

Just for testing - if you have another thick cable lying around use it to ground the block to the battery (in addition to the existing ground) and try again.
