Ticking is dead battery. Jump it. Leave your lights on? Your alarm drained your battery?

x2 on the battery

Ticking but no turn over mean you don't have enough power for the starter motor to spin the tranny. Charge it and make sure you alarm won't draw power because it'll kill your battery (for good) and you'll be stuck! haha...

I'm a wash boy for a dealer and I have heard that sound many times. I hate it every time, I have to run all the way back to the shop and get the booster pack.... ugh.

There is another reason. When I was setting up my engine and it cut out (happened twice) I had to reset the ecu before the car would roll over (neg off battery, hold brake for 10* sec's). Never heard of that before?

Once my car just gave me a solid beep when I turned it to "on" or "start" It turned out my VAF was unplugged. I plugged it back in and it still wouldn't start. So I reset the ECU and bingo, first crank, just like usual :)

So maybe your tripping a major sensor? Short somewhere? Idk if thats how it works, does anyone know if the ECU refuses to start if a major sensor is either not functioning or is sending an "I'm broken!" signal?

Sounds like a batt issue. The only thing I could think of in regards to your alram is the starter kill. Get a cheap multi meter and check the voltage on the batt terminals. And being as tho you have a 96... Get an OBDII code reader. They make things f'n childs play.
