Clogged CAT?

Post by fighttillyoudie0 »

How can I tell if my CAT is clogged without having to take my car into a shop?

 litter box.
It's easy to take it off (with some penetrating oil). Look at the sun through it. I hollowed mine out, and passed emissions.

if you replace your Cat do not let the muffler shop keep it! over the years your cat builds up deposits, deposits of what you might ask, well Platinum. You can make a lot of money selling Used catalytic converters to places that melt them down for the platinum deposits, a used catalytic converter can go for up to 200 dollars.

I believe that a muffler shop will just use an outside temperature reader tosee if the temperature is consistent... if it's overly high on the cat then it's probably clogged... somebody correct me if I'm wrong...

this is true, there was a big operation at my work and all they did was just collect used cats.

Shoot. Mine was really clogged, and I threw away the junk. Thanks for this info! I wondered why the meth freaks are stealing them.

So, To get the bolts off; I need penatrating oil? I tried WD-40 But the bolts wouldn't break for me... I don't have any money to spend right now, so I was wondering If a gutted CAT( Someone told me that's Bad to GUT one) would work better than clogged?

You need to soak the bolts for quite some time with the WD-40, or whatever you're using. An impact gun will come in very handy, but you have to try not to strip the bolts, then it becomes a real pain.

IMO, the best method would be:

1) Soak bolts for some time (a day wouldn't hurt, re-applying a couple of times)
2) Heat up really well with a torch
3) Remove with impact gun

run the car for a little while, jack it up, grab the long handle breaker bar, it'll pop loose :) let it cool then go with a regular ratchet
