So I want to do a engine rebuild. I have the head off, just am not sure how to tackle cleaning the thing. Any suggestions or tips for the head cleaning? what products do I use

Also, what do you guys think of my block? Is this normal wear? I can rebuild this right? Sorry, this is my first rebuild.

Any idea why the right side of the block is covered in so much oil?

Thanks guys

eeeewwww that thing is nasty! I would take it all apart. valve train, cams, pull it all aprat, and take it to a machine shop and have them clean it.

Block could use a cleaning also. That motor has seen better days.

The oil is probably due to a blown or leaky head gasket. Sorta common I think.
As far as cleaning, acid bath it. If there is a Flying J near you and you want to do it cheaply, you might be able to talk them into cleaning head/block for you (they have an acid sprayer in their wash bays), that is if you don't want to clean it yourself.
As for wear and tear. It seems the engine has been neglected oil changes in its past.

Hope this helps.

Just in case anyone is wondering. I bought this car recently so any neglect has not been my fault. Trying to revive it. The seller sold it to me not being able to start.

If the head gasket had blown, would it be hard for the gasket to come off of the block. Just slipped right off when I took the head off. Just so I can get an estimate, does anyone know how much a machine shop charges for cleaning the head?

Thanks in advance.

I have found that the oil comes from the o ring for the distributor..
