Anyone running Nitrous anymore?

Post by colinsmx3 »

OK so evenyone goes TURBO..... is there anyone out there running Nitrous anymore? I wish I still had my kit from my escort but I sold it! I am building a custom fiberglass enclosure in my turnck and want to encorporate a nitrous bottle. So what is safe that I can run on the stock K8? it does have 220khms on it yet has been rebuilt all gaskets replaced and runs great! would a 50 shot not kill it? and what about fuel manegment on the K8 with nitrous? It will be a dry system so 1 line running to the intake tube.

well the nozzles start at 30, atleast thats what I was told when I got my kit for my BP Escort. I think 30 would be fine.

Still got a 50 shot on my turbo setup..and the bottle in the car..I think I was one of the first...if not the first guy running nitrous on a stock motor. My bottle has been empty for a few years now....and am seriously thinking about filling it again!

I would say 50shot dry would be the max. and maybe with a colder range plug as well.

that begs the question.....do you think that my turbo k8 would like a 30-50 shot of nitrous? I am turboed at 7psi ' ish for now.... what do you think?

also, another quick question, I have a nitrous kit for a carb'ed v8, can I just buy the nozzle for my mx-3 intake tube, and run the same solenoids on the mx-3?

what do you do to get more fuel in dry nitrous setups?

thanks.

My friend was at 50 shot on the k8 and it ran great. he sais the k8 didnt stand the 100 shot tho. I never saw this in person tho just word of mouth but its believeable.

LOL...everyone is always scared of nitrous!

Nitrous does the same thing a turbo or supercharger does plus it makes the intake charge MUCH cooler! The reason nitrous has such a bad rep is because people don't understand how the systems work and end leaning out the engine. They size of the shot only depends on how much power your engines internals can reliably support...most will support at least 300HP reliably for a long time if tuned correctly. For example...the B6 engines can all handle 300HP for quite some time reliably on stock internals with a MLS head gasket and I'd advise also upgrading to ARP head studs. This means if your B6 stock is 100HP you could reliably spray a 200HP shot if the engine is properly tuned for it...if it leans out for even a split second though you can kiss that engine good bye...the same holds true for turbo and supercharged engines.

As for useing a carburated nitrous kit on the K8...yes you just need to get a dry nozzle and check to make sure your nitrous jets are the same that your aquired nozzle uses. You can even use a wet nozzle tee'd to your HP fuel line via a fuel solinoid that activates with the nitrous solinoid to support the extra HP if your existing system can't support the required HP. Make sure you start off by jetting it a bit richer than what it calls for and use a wideband to assist you in fine tuning it after that.

One thing to remember is that on a turbo car nitrous will make considerably more HP than it is jetted for if used under boost. This is due to the cooling effect nitrous has on the intake charge. I belive typically nitrous under boost will deliver roughly 20% more power than you jet for. For every 10 Degrees F you reduce the air temp you will typically see 1HP gain provided the additional fuel needed is there. Nitrous enters the gasious state at some where around -125 Degrees F and it is compressed in the bottle as a liquid at 900-1200psi. The bottle pressure is something else you have to consider as when the pressure is higher the system will make more power on a given jet size. This is why when you tune a nitrous engine you ALLLLLways tune it a bit extra rich. You'll see pro race teams heat the bottle with a propane torch...well back in the old days before the advent of the bottle heater...DO NOT USE the torch method!!! Heating the bottle increases the bottle pressure and you should always use both a nitrous pressure gauge AND a safety vent valve! This will preven the bottle from exploding.

I'm running 35 on a stock b6-me SOHC. So far so good. However, I need a better clutch. Once I hit the "happy button" the motor runs like its on steroids but I feel the clutch slip.

I was playing with my friend, Mr. Search ...
I stumbled on this post and it's giving me some wonder.
So here's a question, How much horsepower and torque numbers have any of you seen with spray on a stock K8 motor?

There isn't anything to be scared of, though I don't have a K8 motor.
