Question for AT Transmission Experts

Im totally new to the AT realm.
But heres the deal...
1992 Mazda MX3 V6.
Theres no 1st or reverse.

Toss it in reverse...it doesnt move...but it does seem like it wants to.
Of course theres no 1st gear (L)...but once I get doing in Drive it goes good.

Owner says the he changed the trans fluid and the filter...but the once of the bolts it no set right...

Could...just by a long shot...it be possible to just ry and get the filter to set right and things will be somewhat ok?

I remember having a 626 and reverse was loss...but had a hose replaced and it was good to go.

but chances are the fluid and filter were changed because there was a problem

Ok...well...he said it was done as a tune up when he got the car.
He changed oil, fluids, plugs, wires and other stuff you basically do on a tune up.

He ran into some personal issues and since the tranny is giving issues he never got it sent to a repair shop to be checked out.

I just want to be sure on a possible easy solution.
Otherwise...I will have to price a new AT V6 transmission.

isnt this for the transmission section?

I have heard that if you change the fluid on a really high milleage auto trans. It may actually mess it up? The metal shavings are what keeps it going?? I dont know if its bull.. ive never experienced that when changing auto fluid.

Ive never changed the auto fluid in the escort gt and this is the reason why im scared.

yeah, i think that tends to be if you get it flushed out, the pressure dislodges the built up shavings (shrug) sounds feasible?

This happened to a guy i know back home. He bought a chrysler sebring off my boss (mechanic and tow truck owner for 30 some yrs now). He went home and did a "tune up" on the car by changing the oil, plugs, trans fluid and everything. I believe he had the problem of it not moving forward and just had reverse, anyways my boss told him to get going in reverse and then slam it into gear and it may work itself out of the problem or possibly not. Anyways this did work for him as he is driving the car around today, but at the same time it could mess a trans up really bad also. I am just offereing what i have experienced if you can not find any other way, but i wouldn't reccommend to anyone changing trans fluid in any high mileage car.
