problem after swap

Post by escortluver19 »

i just got done swapping the DE.I try to start the car and it doesnt crank at all.The battery, battery cables, and starter are new.Everything works fine except the starting system. When i try to crank it, the starter soloniod clicks once and the interior lights dim.The battery cables also get a little warm and the cables move when i try cranking it.I also added an extra ground from the starter body to the chassis.I had the starter retested and it passed all tests. The starter signal fuse is also good and i even replaced it just to be safe.Any ideas?

Have you hooked up the neutral safety switch correctly?

Double check your ground connections from the engine to chasis ground as well as the ground connection from the battery to the chasis. Add connections if you have less than 3-4 decent connections. These engines and car platforms are notorious for bad grounds. If you have the battery in the engine bay still.. run a direct negative cable to the engine block off of the negative battery terminal itself.

Next I would try turning the ignition key to the run position and hit the positive (+) Nut on the back of the starter (assuming you can get to it) with a direct jump from the battery. I bet its a grounding problem though. Hope this helps. Cheers

Spot on what I'd do Tunes. Sounds like a ground to me. Heating up of the wires is almost always a ground issue. Check the grounds with a elec tester if you have one. Simply put it on a ohms test. One lead to the ground wire on the engine side and the other lead to the strut tower bolt. If it reads 0 or REALLY close to it then it is a good ground. If not you need to scrape some paint off under the ground wire or look to see if your wire connections are good.

ok guys thanks. You were pretty close.Im new to the mx3 wiring so i actually had the negative cable goin straight to the starter when it should be grounded to the body and the starter actually gruonds through the body of the starter.I fixed the problem and it cranks now but it wont start. The fuel pump isnt turning on.When i jump the f/p and ground on the diagnostic port, the pump turns on and the relay clicks but when i disconnect the jumper the pump doesnt run and the relay doesnt click.Any ideas of where to check?

Double check your fuel lines. Make sure your sending line is pumping into the correct fuel rail. I had this problem jinx me for over an hour once. I if i remember correct the sending line should be connected to the rail closest to the firewall. Hope this helps.
