could be a lot of things, you need to be more descriptive.

check the ribbed intake hose for cracks (especially between the ribs).

When is the last time the car had a tune up or plug wires changed out?

It could very well be the oxygen sensor as it affects the rpm up to 3 k or so.

no rips in the intake have changed the pluggs about three weeks ago but not wires. i can be going down the road and push in the clutch and it sounds fine but when i let off it sounds like !@## till about 3000 rpm i dont know how else to descibe it. it started about 2 days after i changed thermostat but it doesnt run hot or anything so i dont think that is it

There can be a lot of problems that can cause symptoms like this. First thing I would check is plugs/rotor/wire and the fuel system. If the motor was over heated at one point I would do a compression test as well.
