should i swap my 1.6 4-cyl for a 1.8 v6

Post by magiccowinuse »

I found a 1.8L v6 engine in a mx-3 at a junk yard i dont know if it is worth switching out my 1.6 4-cyl for this 1.8. How hard would it be on a scale from 1-10. What would i need other than mounting brackets? Would I have to get a new trans for this engine?

THat would be a waste of $$.

Swap in a BP instead and get the same HP for less $$ and it will be tons easier too.

You could get a K8 for free. But the added work including ripping out the wiring harness is not worth it. If you've already got the 4 cyl, find the BP.

1992-1993 Ford Escort LX-E
1991-1996 Ford Escort GT
1991-1996 Mercury Tracer LTS
1994-1997 Kia Sephia GS

I'm sure you can get one under $500 between the local junkyards. I'm not sure which ones are out as far west as you are, but there's one on North Ave and Cicero just inside the city and another in Summit off I-55 that are pull-it-yourself lots which are usually cheaper.

If you'd rather have the engine just shipped to your door, there are Japanese BP on eBay all day long: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JDM-MAZD ... dZViewItem

The ones from Japan typically have a maximum of only 50K miles. They should give you another 100K miles of trouble free use. If you got a junkyard one, I'd probably rebuild it as they usually come from cars with over 100K miles.

If you decide to rebuild, full engine kits are about $350 with new oversize pistons. Machine work if you assemble yourself would be about $300 probably.

is that a good one?
No. That's an FS engine. Completely different. You want BP. I don't know why that retard listed an MX3 as direct swap.

The K8 wont give you much hp increase. Follows what those guys said and to a ZE or Turbo set-up.

If you have a 92-93, it has the SOHC engine, 88hp
If you have a 94+, it has the DOHC engine, 105hp

As for BP's
Stock BP is 130hp
Stock BP GTX turbo is 180hp
Stock BP GTR Turbo is 210hp
