gear box not selecting 5th

my gear box wont select 5th gear when i go to select it, all you hear is a grinding noise any solutions i can hear the pin selecting 5th when the engine isnt running....any ideas 1-4 is fine 5th isnt.....and its a 1.8 v6....thanx any pictures of what to do would help aswell...

you've lost 5th gear, tranny is bad, time to rebuild :) or replace

rebuild...lol....i wouldnt know were to begin

would it not be possible that if i take the cover of the side of the box it can me amend from thereas thisis were the 5th gear sits...

Its most likely either the syncro teeth or shift fork have worn so far out of spec it wont engage anymore.

Good news. The repair can be done in the car. Youll need a pin punch, hammer, 10mm socket, 32mm socket, impact is nice(though not completely necessary), and a 1" socket. Pop off the drivers side wheel, remove the 10mm holding on the 5th gear cover, and you can access 5th gear.

If you're interested, I have all the parts you need to fix it.

Be pop off the passanger wheel for him as hes in Nessie land
the bonnie ilses, home of haggis.... and yea more than likely the
sincro.....

the syncro would the be the 5th gear wheel...? looks like it has been done before as there is gasket sealer around the cover....i love this forum do you know ive only joined 3 weeks ago and ive help and fixed every problem on my mx3 good work guys lol....

good call, didnt think of that :)

the synchro is a brass colored ring with teeth. all the teeth should be sharp and pointed, with no missing pieces. you will also want to examine the shift fork to ensure there is no lip where the hub has worn into it. either of these can cause your problems, and likely one or both will be obvious upon removal
