Opinion on body work that needs to be done.

Hey Guys,

I have a delima here. I need some body work done on my car, my hood underneath and a bit on the front is rusting, the top of my roof just above the front windshield towards the driver side is starting to rust, as well as both the little pieces that form around the windows both passenger / driver, I also have a little rust spot on the edge of my trunk where it connects between the lights. Heres the real problem, or so I think. I have a white car with blue pearl. I think that it would be almost impossible to match it if I get the body work done? Or am I wrong, with the technology they have out there these days is it possible for them to be able to match it pretty close? or am I just wishful thinking. Any opinions or suggestions what to do would greatly help my cause. Thanks guys!

as far as i know from my b/f telling me (he works in a body shop) it's hard to match ANY paint...what i mean by this is yes, it can look similar to the untrained eye.... but no matter how much blending they do, it won't be 100% perfect and match... I'll get him to post more details when i ask him....

if you could ask him what my best bet would be, I mean I dont want to dump alot into the car but ask him about the pearl and if it can be matched or whatever. Or if he is good enough at it would he be able to help me do some of the work and ill pay him just I dont want to get raped by the shop for steep prices. I believe I only live approx 4 hrs from Pontypool so let me know maybe he can make some extra cash if hes interested!! Thanks alot!

who did ur paint job.... is ur body in rough shape or something cuz if u got a new paint job ur car shouldnt be rusting...

the paint job was done before I owned the car, and whoever did it didnt do a very good job, they didnt clean up the rust or anything, or if they did they only did it in some spots.

well as far as i know you should get the entire thin fixed cuz its hard to remove certain rust spots and more dif spots may pop up

ok well, if you want to just fix the rust spots, cut and weld/grind/bondo a new peace of this steal (16 guage or lower i'd say). Pearl isn't as hard as candy to color match, so your in luck there (candy=dye therefore the more you add the more it changes the color..pearl is a set color)

The best thing to do, would be to get the entire car media blasted (takes off all pait, reveales bar metal), and fix ALL the rust, and redo any bondoing and dents and then you'll be good to go...make sure to check the rust from the inside as well. Then, just paint her up another/same color. Lots of work, but well worth it.

Good luck man, it's up to you what you do, but thats my 2 cents.


or spend 3 billion and get a shop to do it..haah..who does that these days tho, like really.

well if a shop doesnt do it I mean I dont have the tools to strip the car down and fix the rust? lol I am thinking about getting the whole car done. Hopefully it will turn out but any more suggestions are greatly appreciated.

My hood has several holes in its paint revealing metal underneath, apparently from debris on highways experienced by the previous owner. Is there a way for me to (a) cake over the holes and repaint them as if they never happened, or should I (b) strip the hood and repaint it, or should i (c) order a new hood from my local Mazda dealer? (i heard that ordered body parts always come unpainted though)

wow..thread theif.

To answere the weld question, when i say weld, i mean. Weld. And cut. See, you cut out the rust, and then weld a peice of steel the same size as the hole...grind down the welds, bondo, sand, prime/paint and your done.

how much thinner will a body part like the hood be after being stripped and then repainted? stripping off the old paint will make it thinner right :?:

Uh, wow..

metal=metal

metal plus paint=metal plus paint

painted metal - paint = metal.

metal + paint = painted metal.


Its gonna be the same..if you take paint off, then put it on, it'll be the same thickness. How woudl it change? whats your logic? man were do you come up with this stuff. IF you started with like 10 layers of paint, took em all off and then only repainted 3 layers, than yeah it'll be abit thinner...

my logic was that maybe the sandblaster would blast off, grind off some of the metal. maybe even half a mil ground off is enough to bring in some ideology of thinness.

and i'm sorry if i appear to be thread jacking. my logic was to not create new topics (regarding questions that i'm always told have already been asked) to the already plethorical abundance of pages of posts in this forum when i could just simply add a little question of mine to an existing topic that was also built around a relevant idea.
