Post by 93-Spec-Edn »

Hi

I have been informed that when I buy and istalled a used KLZE it will blow blue smoke for 300miles due to the seals hardening up cause its been sitting for over 6 months or so.
Did all of u engine swap guys find this??

Thanks

mine did not blow out much blue smoke, for like a second or two but then it cleaned right up. i have some carbon coming out of my exhaust but i think that is because my last engine was shot and i have no cat. but i don't know how long my engine has been sitting for.

If it blows out longer then 30 seconds you got a bad engine not 300 miles!

Sounds like someone is slinging BS about their engine for sale because they arent sure of the condition of the engine and they are trying to cover their a--. Any oil that burns on initial start up would be residual oil left over from shipping. Its a common practice to put a small amount of oil down the spark plug hole to help keep the rings from seizing when its known that the engine could be sitting for a indeterminate amount of time. So the blue smoke you see from exaust at start up.. usually isnt from the valve seals at all. Valve seals with high miles on them or in an engine that has had improper oil change intervals are more likely to harden up quicker.. but this would be a good indicator that the engine wasnt well maintained.
Just my 2 cents.

i found that it wasn't a huge deal having the engine sit for a long period of time as long as you maintain it well prior to and make sure that is oil on all your seals. i had mine sitting in my garage for like 4 months before i installed it, who knows how long it has been sitting out of the car for. just put some oil in your cylinders before startup to make sure that you rings have oil to slide up and down the cylinder. it should not be a problem.

A good pratice if your got a engine sitting out of a car for a long
period of time is to go and crank them over by hand, to stop seiving
and also letting pressure of the vavle train...

My klze did not smoke either when I started it for the first time.

I would think if they said it will smoke for 300 miles, it will probably continue to smoke for many miles after that due to the rings being toast. Have them show you the results from a compression test.

If its valve related the smoke would most likely only be at start up.

I used to have a honda crx that smoked for 300 + miles. Then I had to have the engine rebuilt :-).
