hey all,

solved my rough idling, it was the spark plug leads, so i got all 6 of them replaced, now its idling perfectly. :)

still have a really long time cold starting the K8 though. my mate says it might be the injectors. is there any other probable cause for a long crank time in cold weather?

thanks for your replies.

Is it a fast speed cranking that just takes a while before it fires? Or is it a slow speed cranking where it sounds like the starter just cant spin the engine fast enough to get it to fire? If its the latter.. check your battery terminal connections for corrosion. If the engine still spins slowly after that.. get your battery load tested, it may be getting weak.

If the engine seems to spin at decent speed but just wont fire for an abnormally long time.. I agree with Jimi.. check your coolant temp sensor. Also.. if you havent replaced your distributor cap and rotor in a while, you should do that as well. Best of Luck.

hm...

its cranks at a decent speed, and it was ambient temperature at 15C today, and it took a while before it fired up.

I think i'll give my injectors a check when i have the time... anyone know how to tell if the injectors are draining?

Draining? Not sure what you mean there.. But you could always run some injector cleaner through your next tank of gas or 2. If your coolant temp sensor isnt working properly though.. it wont make any difference. The Temp sensor helps the ECU determine your start up timing and how much fuel to use. If the ECU doesnt recognize that your engine is cold, it wont be able to determine a proper air/fuel mixture. There is a diagnostic procedure to test your temp sensor in the online shop manual. Best of luck.

when it starts up on a cold engine, the revs are idling at 2000rpm; doesn't this show that the coolant temp sensor is working?

Not neccessarily.. it could be showing that your IAC is functioning properly. 2k seems a bit high though.. My RS only goes upto 1500 RPM on a cold start.
It is possible that it isnt the temp sensor.. but its definately worth checking. The online shop manual shows you how to test it to see if its good or not.. I dont think you even need to remove it.. just unplug it and check resistance (I think). The manual will have more details. Best of luck.
