Racing / Overdrive Question???

I have heard that if you are racing, you should use or can use overdrive in the automatic. I don't see much increase in HP at the start with overdrive on, but when I get up to 90, Overdrive kicks in. Will this hurt or affect anything in the engine when i use overdrive. The only thing I see happening is that the RPMS get higher, but that is normal when in overdrive. Any response would be appreciated.
Chris

well i have an auto 93. and the overdrive button is actually a hold button. it is used to keep the transaxle in place. ie: snowy/wet roads. it produces better traction. to the best of my knowledge, the hold button will HURT your tranny. read more about it in the owner's manual.
------------------
93 MX-3

I thought that was Overdrive too, it's actually a Hold button like deathtrap said. It keep it in that gear. So if it's snowing, you can start out in 2nd with the hold botton on and it wont send as much power to the wheels, less of a chance of slipping. The Owners Manual will tell you more about it.

I've used the HOLD button on the highway to kick the tranny down into 3rd for passing. After reading that the HOLD button is bad, I spoke with the Mazda dealership. They said that, as long as I'm not exceeding redline, the HOLD button is fine for downshifting at high speeds.
Honestly, even DRIVING is bad for Mazda's automatic transmissions. They suck. What scares me is that they'll probably start using Ford transmissions in the future, which are probably worse!!

------------------
<A HREF="
