Custom or Pre-fab Exhaust ? Before I Spend the $$$

Post by millaj01 »

Very quickly, KLZE swap, OBX headers, I believe the answer is to go custom exhaust from what I've read, but I just wanted to get peoples' consensus. That was the way I was leaning all along, but the shop I'm having my swap done by said long term I'd probably get better use out of a pre-fab system (maybe due to construction quality and our winters here).

The only pre-fabs I've read about are the Pacesetter and the Brullen. I've heard the Pacesetter is to be avoided, and the Brullen is good. I've only seen the Brullen @ CorkSport before, but they don't appear to offer it any longer (at least from the web page). I'd be looking for a 2 1/4" system.

Sorry to rehash an old topic.

Although I have a custom system, it was done by the installers of the ZE who are not muffler/exhaust system specialists. If I had to do it all over again, I'd follow Tatsu's recommendations as to the use of which MagnaFlow components to use and diameter and type of piping. The rationale was sound and reasonable to me and I believe a lot others. The thread is only a couple of months old. I myself would go for the custom approach but only by exhaust professionals. The feedback posts seemed to indicate that the cost differential is negligable as far as getting a custom system. If it's a year round daily driver and being subjected to salted road conditions, it would seem to be prudent to spend a little more for good quality piping and components since you wouldn't want to re-visit the muffler shop again. I'll try to scare up Tatsu's thread and attach it later.

I found it.

Hey thanks.... I went ahead with the custom setup and based my pre-silencer and silencer selections directly from Tatsu's post (hats off to you, mate). I selected the Magnaflow P/N 14415 (4" diameter, 14" long, 2.25" inlet/outlet with 2.5" core) presilencer and the P/N 14815 (5x8" non-offset oval, 14" long, 2.25" inlet with pre-installed twin-3" diameter/7" long round tips) silencer. Based on the description and picture I found, the silencer will maintain a somewhat stock look but with 3" tips instead of 2" tips as the stock GS has.....a bit more aggressive looking. The exhaust shop doing the work ordered the parts and hopefully it'll be done in a few days. Can't wait to hear it (but not hear too much of it)

I'm really excited about getting my car back after all the work that's been done. The engine's in and should be mostly tuned....just the exhaust as the last piece. I'm going to try and swing by the garage tomorrow to have a look and snap those pics for ya......

Good stuff Jay, glad to hear. Finding a shop that can bend stainless is hard to find..even the local Midas shop would do mine in stainless. I already have the same muffler you got with the original cat and no presilencer though I can see myself replace the cat and installing the pre-silencer pretty soon. I think you'll be quite impressed with it's performance and sound of course. Mine still has that distinct MX drone that I've grown accustomed to for the last 10 years between 2,500 and 3,300 rpm but after that it smooths out quite nice and is not really noticeable above 3,600-3,700 rpm and upwards. No rush on the pics Jay...and thanks again. I've been referencing your ZE aquisition to the girl in the KLZE TB thread who's not having an easy time trying to confirm the authenticity of a potential ZE engine. I've mentioned to her to contact you, because as far as I can see you have one of the sweetest ZE aquisitions that I have ever seen. Hope you don't mind the reference. Perhaps you could point her to your source and let her evaluate her options.

Not to be left out, - Steve, (Babybluemx3), you have a sweet looking engine too!!
