with regular tune up, oil change, timing belt and water pump replacement, any 4cyl should last well over 200K

unlike most domestic vehicles, Japanese engines seem to last forever if maintained relatively well... I've got a friend whose parents gave him an 88 Honda Civic with 270k miles on it.... still runs perfectly
There is no reason why, if well maintained, Mazda 4-cyls shouldn't last that long.

I highly doubt he has over a 1/2 a million miles on an MX-3 with a stock engine.

Unlikely.. but possible.. Especially if he did regular oil changes and had been running synthetic oil from the start. I had almost 300,000 miles on the 350 in my nova before I sold it.. and other than a valve grind at 160,000 miles.. that engine still had 165-175 psi in all cylinders and still pushed 35 psi oil pressure at idle and would peg the needle on the oil pressure guage when under throttle. Heh.. the guy that bought my Nova still doesnt believe it had that many miles on it and that setup could bake a new set of rubber to nothing in only 3-4 good lightups

But then I am extremely anal about all fluid changes. New clean fluid = longevity for all systems in any car

But 1/2 a million miles without at least some headwork even with proper maintanence is pretty unlikely.

Not to mention that TysonB is in Canada, so it's probably 630,000 Kms. It works out to 393750 miles.
