Oh that's awesome, esp. since I'm a big NSX fan....
M azda e
X perimental...and the 3 stands for the doors (hatch included)?
Or maybe we can dream and think the 3 meant Mazda's plan for displacement!
We'd be like a 5.0 stang that is actually fast!!!

I actually the three is to signify it's cousin the 323, considering they are built off the same chassis... maybe I'm wrong though

I doubt the 3 stands for the amount of doors, because the MX6 is a 3 door also. Like MX3 Freak said its probably because the MX3 and 323 are cousins (at least the 4 bangers are), just like the MX6 and 626 are cousins. But then what about the MX5?!?!?!

Yeha, the 3 definitely doesn't mean 3 door, or that its related to the 323 (its only built off the same unibody, chassis are different)
MX3, MX6 and MX5 and then there is RX7. My guess is the numbers have to do with the increasing performance of the car, although the miata IMO is better overall than a MX6, but whateva.
Now mazda is calling their cars by numbers which IMO is stupid. the 121 is now the "2", Protege/Familia/323 is the "3" and the 626/Millenia is the "6". Boooorinng. I don't understand why they'd take their best selling car, that had a great reputation and suddenly change its name to the "3". IMO it will prove to be a fatal mistake, they are already selling relatively poorly.

Well hey, history may repeat itself. The MX-3 sold poorly in the States, and now there are thousands of enthusiasts holding onto these cars 8 years after they went out of production. Of course, the MX is a more unique car IMO than the new 3. I'm not sure hold well it will hold up. I kinda like the 5 door, except for the front grill. I think Hyundai for some reason..... but wow, you can load that car up with leather, navigation, and other nice stuff, but it'll cost over $20K. I'd rather have a Mazdaspeed Protege for the money.

Mx-3 is a 3-series, along the same lines at the 323 and protégé
I belive 626 and Mx6 and Probe are cousins as well, with maybe the millenia

The reason car manufacturers have slowly switched to numbers/letters (Mazda6, Mazda3, Rx-7, 323, IS300, G35) instead of real names (Atenza, Axela, Efini, Familia, Altezza, Skyline)in North America is because resarch shows that North Americans accept numbers better that names, just like they do accept pictures better than written instructions or signs.

Here are my random thoughts on this-
The number stands somehow stands for the size/cost of the car. The MX-3 is smaller than an MX-6. A 323 is smaller than a 626 which is turn smaller than a 929. The miata, MX-5, doesn't fit in with the size thinking though. It could also have something to do with the cars cost and placement in the line up. The MX-3 being cheaper than an MX-6 and the 323 being cheaper than a 626 and that being cheaper than a 929.
The MX- part has some relation to the car being sporty and having a piston engine since Mazda only puts the MX nomenclature on their sporty/sports cars with piston engines. Maybe M is the beginning of a word that in japanese begins with M such as piston or reciprocating.
The RX does actually stand for rotary experimental. I'm not sure there was ever an RX-1(there was an RX-01 show car a few years back) but there were RX-2's, 3's, 5's and 7's and now the 8. The 7 is now reserved for Mazda rotary two seater sports cars. If a new rotary powered sports car comes out it will most definitely be called an RX-7.
