DE Vs ZE PRO´S AND CON´S LIST

Post by BATTOSAI »

We can build a pro´s and cons tables from both engines in order to see which one is better. We can go some way like this:

PRICE
KL: 2 POINTS(because it´s cheaper= GOOD)
Kl-ze: 1 POINT (because it´s more expensive= BAD)

BOOST SAFETY MARGIN
KL: 2 POINTS ( less compression= more safer boosted engine)
KL-ze: 1 POINT (the opposite of previously stated)

CAM PROFILE
KL: 2 POINTS (Less agressive=better for turbos)
KL-ze 1 POINT

OFF-BOOST RESPONSE
KL: 1 POINT
KL-ZE 2 POINTS (better because of the Higher c/r)

LAG FEELING
KL:1 POINT
KL-ZE: 2 POINTS (the greater c/r helps the engine pull better when off boost, reducing lag feel. Also the more strong exhaust wave caused by the greater compression sure it kicks the turbo harder at less RPM´s )

INTAKE CHARGE TEMPERATURE
KL: 1 POINT
KL-ZE 2 POINTS (Assuming the same level of horsepower)

PLUMBING QUALITY
KL: 1 POINT
KL-ZE: 2 POINTS (As you don´t need so much boost to adquire the same Hp, your intake plumbing and intercooler won´t work at the same pressures than the Kl ones)

FUEL PRESSURE (If FMU is used)
KL: 1 POINT
KL-ZE: 2 POINTS (Less boost to build same horsepower = less fuel pressure to enlarge fuel flow)

IGNITION TIMING ADJUSTMENT
KL: 2 POINTS
KL-ZE 1 POINT (higher compression needs a more retarded timing to avoid detonation when in boost, so another piggyback is needed)

That´s what comes in my mind just now. By the moment the winner is the ZE but everybody should rate them from 1 to 5 points instead of 1 to 2, everybody knows his skills or preferences, for example someone can prefeer the laggier feel of a Kl instead of the crisper one from a Kl-ze for better traction. You choose!!

of course parts between engines are swapable as well.... making them equal when you can take the best from each and mix and match....
and again 300hp is 300hp no matter which engine your looking at.

Daily driver- High compression, low boost klze
All track car- Low compression, high boost klo3 with a large turbo and nitrous to get it spooling.

Do you have a link to that particular discussion on Probe Talk by chance?
