Ok guys my Compressor was making a ticking sounds when a/c is turned on however I thought it was nothing big until today... Was driving down the road a/c was ice cold then all of a sudden it started blowing warm air... We stoped in at wal-mart and when I turned off the motor I heard this Hissing sound coming from arround the compressor. Now when I turn on the A/C all I get is hot air but I can feel and hear the compressor kicking in... Does this mean that a hose might have cracked or something or did my compressor bite the dust? Please help... Thanks
Update: Lines are dry no coolant and I think its the fan kicking in not the compressor.. hmmm

Hey mine did the same thing about 2 months ago. The problem with mine was a pressure release valve on the back/bottom of the compressor was stuck open therefore letting all the freon out. You have to get a replacement part at the dealership for 50 bucks. The guy I was talking to about it said it was a common thing and they usually have them in stock. Well anyway hope I helped
Brandy

WHAT IS THAT FUNNY TICKING NOISE?!!?! i have a 93 rs and it just makes the worst clicking/ticking noise and it sounds like the compressor...after turning the ac on for a bit it just starts...clicking. saw another mx3 driving down the street and it was making the same damn racket! im kinda scared to switch my system over from r12 to r134a(we're just switching the fittings and flushing the system and adding r134a...dont really know the details but i know its really the recommended way of doing the switch over...but it is a good 900 dollars cheaper so...)...dont wanna break anything that might already be broken?? so its kinda nice to know other mx3 owners have the same funky problems...but its still...bizarre.

Update:
Took my mazda into the dealer after A/C went out. They told me that the high press8ure switch was bypassed and that the compressor blew out. Then the told me $1100. I said I don't have that and after about 10 mins of talking he told me that I could try replacing the pressure relief valve on the compressor, however I would have to do it cause they don't do that. So I went to a repair shop installed the valve and back to mazda I went.. I told them just to evac it and I was going to try and recharge it with R-134a(its a r-12 system). Well after about 1 hour the guy comes back saying that it wouldn't hold pressure at all but they managed to evac it. I asked to they know where it is leaking from and he told me arround the ball bear seal on the compressor. He then repeated the $1100 repair cost. I left there thinking how hot it is in Texas and where the heck I was going to get $1100. I already bought the R-134a kit to install when I bought the pressure relief valve so it was just sitting there in the floor.. Well I started to think hmm if I got to replace it all anyway it won't hurt to just try it, so I said what the heck. I installed everything and started to fill it up.. I was listening arround the compressor waiting to here the leak. After about 1.7 8oz cans I check the pressure.. The low level pressure was at 38psi. A/C worked again. I checked it 10 hours later and the pressure was 37 close to 38. Might be a leak, but if it is it is very small.. Mazda said it wouldn't hold at all...hmmmmm... ANYWAY
PROBLEM:
My new problem is when the compressor is on it makes a LOUD ticking sound.. Kinda like when you stick a pencil in a fan.... It has done this since I bought it but I don't know how to fix this.. Can someone help me with this?
FYI:
Don't trust everything Mazda says...

WELL...so i went ahead with the r134a from r12 conversion even though i was worried about the clicking/ticking coming from my compressor...worked like a CHARM. my ac is FREEZING cold and my ac compressor STOPPED making noises...just needed freon i guess. all we did was empty all the remaining r12 in the system and run the vacuum through the tubes with some stop leak and oil for an hour, then we charged her up and she's all good to go! VERY happy :))

Resa,

You are a GOD!!!!! My compressor was making that horrible clicking/ticking noise and so after reading your post I went back to wal-mart got a 8oz OIL charge can went home decharged the a/c by about 10 psi and but about 3/4 of that can in. I hook the hose up turned the valve, and as soon as I turned the can over my compressor went SILENT!!!!! I makes no noise at all NOW!!! YEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!
You just SAVED ME $1200 DOLLARS!!!!!!
