I'm actually just curious what car you've got. That's about what I'm getting as well ( i set up a little logger at
http://dukes.internetmaximum.com/gas.php to track my usage)
I'm driving a '93 1.597L and just recently put in new NGK Iridium IX plugs too (didn't seem to make a difference) I'm also getting the idle problem, but not as bad since the new plugs.
I went to the Mazda dealership, and they said I need an Oil Pressure switch, a distributor O-ring and new cam and crank seals. I'm not much of a mechanic, but common sense tells me that can't help the engine's efficiency.
I paid $40CAD for a multipoint inspection, and I think it's a good deal to see what's wrong.

Do you just get any gas anywhere or always use the same company/station.
My 1.6 DOHC would get 16mpg off of race track gas yet it would do 29 in the city off of texaco. Always somthin to look at.

Did you change the cap & rotor when you did the wires & plugs? Those are the fastest wearing parts of the ignition system.
Get rid of the Platinums. They are made for people who dont like to get tuneups on a regular basis. They tend to decrease your milage as well. Get the NGK plugs, if you're worried about a solid spark go a step hotter.
May wanna look into an injection system cleaning, not the stuff you pour in the tank either. A real cleaning can make a load of difference.
Where you get the gas may or may not make a difference. Just a note, I tracked my milage for a couple years, & there is no noticable difference in milage between 87 octane & 92. Save your $$, just buy from a quality brand sation.
