Auto Tranny Shifter

I'm looking to cut the shaft to my shifter but i'm not too sure whats involved with it. I was looking at the car today and the existing one is just too damn long 
. I wanna cut it at least in half and keep the existing shifter knob. Has anyone done this, and if so how did you cut the shaft. Any tips?
