Okay, I took some time out of my day and went to Mazda and copied all the gear ratios from all the relevant models.

I'll update the first post now

So my mx3's tranny is going out and the estimate I got for a rebuild was $1600 bucks. I can't seem to find a replacement anywhere. It is a 1.6L I4 with an automatic transmission. My question is, is there any interchangeable transmission? I'll even consider changing it into a 5 speed if the price is right. Or if you know any reputable shop that might have my transmission for cheap?

do a search on 5sp swap as i believe it will pop right in.
they also can be found for $150 to 300 at junk yards.

atx must be from any sister chassis, B6 engine, IIRC. So, 1.6 SOHC 323 and protege I don't pay much attention to the autos, because they suck.

5 speed swap is found on here, its honestly just a day of work. Gathering the parts is a bit more difficult, might be a day in a scrap yard.

I've called every junk yard within a 50 mile radius and can't find another mx3 anywhere.

First off: BP, 92 RS, (had) stock F5M-R.
Looks like I'm hunting for a new tranny too. I went to a yard today and they brought out an auto 92 SOHC, but nothing on that interchanged (well duh). I looked at an Escort GT G5M-R trans, and the mating shaft looked longer (plus the whole motor mount didn't look like it'd swap over. The speedo interface looked different too. I was also a little unsure, as I'd heard something about our axles being different? (Splines?)
They had a 92 SOHC 1.8 protege, but wouldn't pull it since it was close to closing time.

So, what trannys interchange?

Escort GT (BP)
Kia Sephia
Protege LX (BP)
Protege DX (B8 & B6)
323s?

Also what about the speedos? digital vs. cable?

I've called every junkyard in the south seattle area and haven't found a tranny yet (or overlooked my options?)

Man.

BP is G series transmission. This is known. digital speedo, and G sized internals, and G axles, etc... so no, BP is a G series. 92 RS is an F series.

People have thrown escort GT axles into the MX without binding, but I wouldn't. the escort GT motor you looked at was either a BP or an 1.9l SEFI bulls--- ford motor.

You're asking questions that are answered in the first post. All B series engine's transmissions interchange.

Yeah, I didn't want to throw another 150-200$ at axles anyway.
I've already got to get a new clutch (blew a hole inside the bell housing and dumped the gear oil on clutch)

So the G series tranny used different axles (22 spline? or something like that...)
The digital speedo was on all versions of the I4 G series trannys?
The G internals from the I4 and V6 are swappable (as posted on page 1)

I guess my real question was for the 92 SOHC protege tranny interchange.
I'm also asking questions to help get a some information I thought might be lacking.

Do we have a post about which trannys were on which motors/cars?

Just go get BP axles from a Escort or Protege. Apparently they do not bind. They will fit your MX hubs.

It says clearly, even in caps on the first page that all B series engine's transmissions interchange.

So any b series transmission from any year from a mazda or other sister company will bolt on without any problem?

any transmission from any B series engine, yes.

Thats what I meant by this:
Yup. Any B series 4 banger from the 1.3L in Europe, the the 1.8L B8 have the same transmission bell housing, that is, THEY ALL INTERCHANGE.

Sorry for being such a ditz. I just don't want to go and spend money I don't have for something that won't fit. Thanks for the info.
