I doubt it. Disty's are very s---. They fail all the time. You may have even got a faulty one that's on it's last legs. At least though it has shown you that the problem is ignition related. Somewhere and something to do with that.

I would advise working on a HEI mod or at the very least check those disty wires are solid, time it properly (all you need is a tiny wire or paperclip jumpering TEN and GND) and go from there.

when you swapped the disty, did you swap the cap and all or did you pull your plug wires? If you have your new disty in close to the same position as your old one, you might have a few plugs wires in the wrong position or the contacts might have moved. Verify the wires are in the right positions and check to make sure they are making good contact in the cap itself.
