In a sense, assuming they're both "stock" or relatively so, this is correct.

This is definitely in need of clarification. The relationship between lift and duration determines where the power is made, not necessarily how much power is made. Power higher up doesn't necessarily mean MORE power. It simply means maximum power is achieved higher up.

In this case, it's correct(barely), but it is not a general rule to be followed... Just saying it so nobody takes the information too far off topic :P
Thanks for clearing things up! :freak:

So i said it had tons of power....today i experienced a power loss.....significant one. I will check the codes to see if anything new came up. I have a sneaky suspicion that this motor is going to die soon. 2 more days......

Thanks. My main point for KL engines is when comparing two identical KL's - the one equipped with kl31 cams will always make more power.

@ atx_mx3 - I suggest trying to keep the engine going for as long as possible whilst you do up your ZE if you get one. Then you can take your time and build a very reliable fast engine. Big loss of power, could be timing has jumped, in which case wytbishop is correct. Or knock sensor. Code check is in order :)

I have stopped revving it past 4k. I am going to check codes today, see if something new popped up. Ideally, what I would like to do is: Get the KLZE, make it fresh. Swap it, then take the DE and make it fresh too. Doesn't hurt to have a spare motor laying around. Especially with these finicky K series....

Wow lot's of codes. O2 sensors will fix four of those codes. Rockauto.com has fairly cheap stock sensors, which are OEM denso's.

DENSO Part # 2344143
DENSO Part # 2344606

Code 2 is crank angle sensor. http://www.mx-3.com/manuals/showimg.php ... F2-077.gif

Another is EGR, which is code 16. Manual says open or short circuit. May not even be connected from engine swap?

Code 69 should be the engine coolant sensor, they call it water thermosensor. This will make you run rich as hell and lose power. When mine buggered up I chewed lots more fuel and had lots less power. Fix that first, then see if that helps the O2 sensor codes. Then do O2 sensors and the others IMO.

Thx RX8SE3P for being active in my thread and giving me useful info.

The motor is a KLDE but its running on a K8 ecu. The spot where the temp switch would go(on the K8) is flat on the DE....It looks like they used nothing from the k8 and everything from the mx6 or probe they got the motor out of.

No problem mate, glad to be of some sort of help!

Seems you would have a 94+ engine and your mx3 is a 93. The 94 and later engines drop the extra coolant temp sensor and just use one. This could play some part in the code. Best bet is a 94 KLDE ecu, then it won't look for any extra coolant sensors.

Make sure you don't go 95 for the ECU as the distributor wiring is changed over and you won't be able to start the car without swapping wires.

Awesome guys! Good to see progress here, I've been kinda lurking for a few days. I agree about the Cam thing too btw, I just wanted to go a little more into the topic, so others reading this down the road got a clearer picture of what they do! :)

KLDE ECU it is. I don't mind having to tap the filler neck and putting the sensor in...but I think this motor needs the right ECU...even if it does blow up soon.
More troubles...So today I'm driving it home after sitting all night and most of the day, I have NO power past 3.5-4k. It miss-fires badly. The tachometer is also erratic....faulty ICM?

*Edit- It's about time to get rid of the OEM ICM, having had the same issues with my first Mx3 GS. Ill be buying/installing the HEI ignition module in the morning ...eliminating 1 more variable.

Was able to get a BRAND NEW distributor to test on my car. The horrid miss fire went away, but still not power past 4k. I am going to take it back to the owner and do the HEI mod...will keep you guys updated.

EDIT- Put the old distributor on the vehicle and did the HEI mod. Miss went away...still no power past 4k. Pulling the timing covers...
