It's very likely that the mechanic looked at it, realized the timing belt was gone and assumed that the valves would have been bent.

Either way it tells me at the very least he doesn't know what he's doing. I would have asked him how he knows that valve is bent. There is a way to confirm it and if he's any good he will explain it to you. That is a question you should ask of the shop you take it to next. i.e."The last guy said that the valves were bent. Can you confirm that for me?" and get him to show you.

FYI. When the cams are pointing straight up a bent valve won't close all the way. So you have to remove the valve covers and turn the engine over by hand and check each cylinder to be sure all four valves close when the cam lobes are up.

A compression test doesn't involve removing the valvecovers, and 0 PSI points to a valve issue.

It would also probably run on 4 cylinders... sound like a tractor though.

If the timing belt is stripped or broken and the cams aren't spinning, several cylinder's valves will be held open causeing zero compression. If the timing belt is stripped or broken and the cams aren't turning you have to either turn the cams by hand to check or remove the heads.

Any mechanic worth his salt can hear a broken timing belt when cranking.

There are also pretty good bore scopes these days.

But we digress.

mind you as advanced german cars are the mechanics are garbage and everything is overpriced. Thats why i had to get a second opinion before i swap the motor too early. I wanted to rebuild a DE before i put it into the MX-3
