Test the temp sensor, they go bad pretty easy and have a huge impact on the way the car runs.

iirc, the EGT ENGINE harness is the same, the EGT INTERIOR harness is different. I think you have to swap pins around to make em work. But Im not %100 on this.

Good good.
I have a spare temp sensor at home so I'll
Try that. Would that make the cars throttle at low
Speeds very jerky?

Also, could I just use the Egt engine harness
And keep the mx3 dash harness?

If not, anyone have a howto for the pin swap at all?

Was looking under the hood today.. the harness on the motor doesnt look like a normal harness like the escort. the dizzy has 2 separate plugs (one 5 wire), another plug on the side (cant remember the wire count) and a single wire that goes to a black block looking thing on the side of the distributor.

iirc, the egt harness only has one plug for the distributor

has anyone successfully swapped to an escort gt harness before? any pics, ect ect?

would be awesome help.

i have a bp egt ecu.. and i have a whole egt harness.. engine and dash..and i have a slew of vaf's.. although i hope and pray i can just keep the mx3 dash harness.. i like having working gauges.... and no gremlins down the road.

Oh man.. I've got a lotta questions if there's
That much involved with running the bp ecu/vaf.

Is the progt harness the same as an Egt? I'm not sure..
also, noticed the charge light and cel don't come on
Even during acc on.. Is this due to the modified stock harness?

the dizzy plugs alone on this motor compared
To an Egt Bp are completely different in
Style size and number of wires and plugs

What would my best scenario be for this harness issue?

anyone in sw Ontario with experience?????

After long delay *sorry lol*

Dist pic

Image

some engine shots

Image

Image

this is where the solenoid thingers that were looped into themselves (vac lines)
this shot is with the things removed (you can see 1/2 harness connnectors top right, near the fuel rail/fpr area)

Image

here are pics of the actual units themselves i pulled

Image
again notice how the vac hose is looped.. how is it supposed to do anything? and what the hell is it?

this pic is the other solenoid/mess.. (there were 2 connectors.. one had one solneoid looped into itself.. the other connector had 2 solenoids looped into themselves, one hose is missing in pic but i have it)
Image

the throttle body... ( id love to know what the hell is up with the thing bolted via the long extensions to the throttlebody.. what it does, why it's there.. why one hose is cut and taped off (facing rad) and why there is a massive restriction aka the sharp metal angled bend if you want to call it a bend. more of like a 90' edge)

Image

The maf (confirming it is indeed a maf)
Image

let me know if anyone can shed any light on ANYTHING...

im super desparate to get this motor powered by a proper bp ecu/vaf.. i have a bp vaf and ecu.. and a full egt harness..
can someone PLEASE "walk" (yeah right) me thru getting the damn thing bp ecu/vaf swapped?
Someone mentioned that they remember the car running a "modified stock" harness.. that scares me... where do i even start?

Luckily at least the car drives normally.

other than that, she's great! LOL

gas mileage alone speaks volumes of my desparity..

280-300 a tank.. if i granny..

And lastly, the money shot

Hey hey, anyone have any idea yet what the hell the thing on my throttlebody is??

i've come across numerous importer photos of the 2nd gen bp, that have this ugly restrictive contraption.

can i remove it and run my intake my way i want to do?

Can a 1g bp throttlebody swap onto that intake manifold??
is the 1g and 2g throttlebodies the same physically??? what about the IAC sensor & plug? tps plug?

Not sure exactly what you're looking at, can you circle it? I think it's just a capped off vacuum port.

the honkin metal slab bolted onto the throttlebody via long extensions.. it has the capped off port that is pretty big for a vac port (anhy idea where it goes?) and it has the large fitting on top i guess to run to the throttlebody. and again.. i've seen a bunch of importer photos of this motor with the same contraption bolted to them.

it practically rubs the brake booster

I say just swap on one of those spare intakes/throttlebodies you have.

The disty is definitely a B6 disty.

People have swapped in an EGT/Protege harness before and the gauges worked. You might have to swap a few wires around, but I don't know for sure.

If you really want to make sure that everything works, find a SOHC 92-93 4cyl mx-3 engine harness. BP's are plug-n-play into those (even the VAF and ECU too I believe). Sensors probably differ from 1st and 2nd gen BP's, but you have a spare engine that you could swap sensors off of.

Can you confirm that the 94 dash harness will work with the 92-93 sohc engine harness?
i.e tacho,temp,speedo ect ect?

if that's the case, hell that would make things exponentially easier for me.

As far as I know, the only thing that is different is for the speedometer. 92-93 4cyl uses mechanical and the 94+ uses electric/digital. That is only effected by the trans, so the 92-93 engine harness should work fine with the 94+ dash.

If I'm wrong, someone correct me.

Ohhhh man i hope nobody corrects you.

that would be sweet.

there's a few older mx3 rs's at the local scrappers... so as soon as i get confirmation from anyone backing this up, im going to go ahead and pull the mx3 sohc harness.

and from there i just need to apparently run 2 wires for vics correct?

God i miss fuel mileage. lol

So to recap. I need a sohc mx3-rs harness (going to see if anyone else backs this up)
and then all my bp bits should work pnp (vaf/ecu/distributor/ignition coil)

I really like this post and I don't even have a 4cly. :D I'm surprised Ryan hasn't jumped in on this one. I'll pm him. He's a BP guy. Really good work so far RedBPmx3. Nice to see your trying your best to solve this. Car looks great as well. Go to the Dealership for the ETest letter. They're the ones who need to write it. Chat with the serving manager and I'm sure he'll help you out. Letter should be FREE. :D
