Re: Mechanic apprenticeship programs?
You guys don't know how lucky you are.
Even the heaviest jobs around won't pay that much here in Miami. I've done several of them. Worked in construction for a year, for $8 an hour. So far, the best paying job I had (and the heaviest by far), was for a water pump company (installing big water pumps for construction sites and the likes), and it paid $12/hr. And the job was so hard that, while I was working there, more than 2 dozen people came to start working there, and no one lasted till the 2nd day. One of them actually said he was going for lunch on the first day, and never came back...
As for "few and far between"...as of today, I've been unemployed for 11 months, 3 days. I would kill for a $7/hr job, right now.![Shrug ](./images/smilies/shrug.gif)

For a male aged 18-25 with no work experience, but a strong back, can make 12 easy. Upto around 20.
But this is CAD, and everything up here is more expensive than the USA, more than just the ratio of our currencies. I need to work 2.5 hours to pay for a tank of gas at $14/hr.

Re: Mechanic apprenticeship programs?
That's great. To fill the 13 gallon MX-3 tank in Miami, at $8/hr, you'd need to work almost a full day. You,d need about $20/hr to fill it up in 2 1/2 hrs. And those wages simply don't exist here.
Just to give you an idea, a friend of mine is a surgery assistant, with years of working experience, and she's making $14/hr, part time.

Re: Mechanic apprenticeship programs?
You do the math. Yesterday, regular gas was $2.87/gal.
For a 13 gal tank, that's 37.31.
8 hrs @ $8/hr are $64. After all the deductions, you're left (if you're single, no kids), with about $56. That's almost 5 1/2 hours to a tank.
Add to that the fact that, as of today, full time jobs in here are a pipe dream.

Re: Mechanic apprenticeship programs?
yeah but you get to live in miami. im stuck in cold rainy a-- canada. if you want to talk gas prices we pay $1.15 a litre which is about $4.35 a gallon. we pay almost twice as much for gas as you yanks, and full time jobs are probably just as hard to come by.

Yeah, and I've been trying to get out of this stupid a$$ city for 10 years now.mikeinaus wrote:yeah but you get to live in miami. im stuck in cold rainy a-- canada.
Don't get confused: Miami is NOT what you see on TV. Come visit, and I promise you will be disappointed.
But yeah, Miami is hot. That's probably the only advantage it has over Canada. That, and it never snows. I hate snow.

Re: Mechanic apprenticeship programs?
I have always worked under the table ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
And gas is only 95.9 here, I feel lucky.![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
And my last tank, I got 530km's on $38 (39.6 L) (edit, I can't do math.)
But thats 100% highway miles.

Re: Mechanic apprenticeship programs?
Ryan, that doesn't make any sense. $38 for 36.4L is 1.04/L, not 95.9.Ryan wrote:

Re: Mechanic apprenticeship programs?
Inodoro, you're right.
I'm doing math beyond calculus at school, but I can't do a simple conversion like that.... haha...
It would be 39.4L
And that tank was extreme. If I drive 110 everywhere, I get between 350 and 400 km's.
