i wish scrap yards would be the same around here...

here the scrap yards are so expensive... seriously, 140$ for 6 nissan injectors with 190k km... wtf

here they look at the price new and take a little % off and here ya go, take it or leave it...

anyways nice find dan...! keep scrapyarding...

It appears we're coming from two completely different knowledge bases. You are aware that all the 95 Millenias in the US had KL31 heads right?

All debating aside, the engine looks really clean in the pics, probably a good find.

Sooo... dumb question here.

What's the difference between kl31 heads, and normal KL-DE heads? (I mean, other than the camshafts)

Do they have better flow? Smaller combustion chambers? What?

@ Inodoro: just for starters: larger intake valves, square intake port runners, no egr passage.

Dan grab those strut bar brackets! It looks like it had the corksport strut bars!

Hey guys thanks for all the nice comments. The comments here makes getting the deal a hell of a lot more fun. Guys like to share. And Ya I never did find an MX6 for my window switch but I've had a couple guys on MX6 contact me so I'm probably good there. Igor I'll see about getting those strut mounts but I can't till I come back from vacation.
hppwdn, I'm sure you have a point to make but it's eluding me. The only Kl31 1A1 and 101 codes are on the KLZE. Maybe check the Fax section and bone up a little bit. A lot of people put the millenia curved neck on the straight neck ZE because A. straight neck ZE's are usually what places stock and B. the only guarantee that your getting the cams is from the straight necks. The curved necks have different cams for reasons that I'm sure you'll find in the Fax section. (standard and automatic transmissions) Both engines develope the same HP just at different RPMs in fact the curved neck with the milder cams develops it's peak HP more in the range we would usually want when driving around Town. (Dan now waits to see if MX3autozam comes on to correct him). So is that a clean engine or what?

Dan: I was kidding about the switches. Of course it's a great find.

I think what hppwdn is trying to say is that most of the HP gain in the ZE is because of the different, more aggressive camshafts, and the higher compression due to the flat pistons. For what I've been reading, the Millenia engine doesn't have the same power as the ZE: it has 174HP, instead of the 199 of the ZE.

Thank you Night Shade. That's exactly what I wanted to know. So, that means that, when shopping for a DE, Millenias are more desirable than any other engines.

There's a post here about millenia motors and as far as I know you can't use that motor, it won't fit and the harness is different.

Inodoro Pereyra, I knew you were joking.

If you'd like me to expand upon the point that's eluding you PM me and I'll pass on the info to you.

When I post in the tech forums it's to share knowledge I've gained over the past ten years doing countless KL swaps be it with imported engines or junkyards engines (we're talking over 100 engine swaps here). Unfortunately, threads like this one where I spend my whole day having to prove facts/credibility is the reason I rarely post in the tech forums here and keep my technical conversations to Probetalk where KL knowledge is far more developed and researched.

Vehicle-------------------------Head Codes
Japanese: MS8 aka MX6= KL31-101 and KL31-1A1
Japanese: Eunos 800: aka Pre-2000 Millenias= KL31-101 and KL31-1A1
American, European, Australian: 93-94.5= KL-101 and KL-1A1
American, European, Australian: 94.5 to present= KL-101 and KL-1A1
American: 2000-up Millenias= KL-31

I think I got this right. Thanks

I think that's in reference to the KJZEM 2.3 miller cycle engine?

Being UK market unfortunately I can't speak from experience, I can only post what I read from probetalk (which is alot  ). As stated KL31 heads (with square ports affectionately known as ZE) were found in 95 US Millenias. This is a general consensus, derived from various members hands on experience. So it's never as simple as the cheat sheet!

The KLZE is a JDM engine. The KL31 heads are apparently not exclusive to ZEs/JDM. KL31 cams however, AFIK are exclusive to the KLZE / JDM market, therefore in conjunction with KL31 heads are indictive of yes, a True KLZE... So given KL31 heads codes, a millenia intake manifold, and kl01 cams it could just as easily be a 95 USDM millenia.

Is it worth getting caught up on? Not to me, and certainly not at that price, but I thought I'd have a shot at clearing up some misinformation here.

The heads look fantastic, which is what would matter more to me. As always I recommend to change the intake springs and retainers to DE ones. With the clean heads it's looking promising to be a an import engine, of course it could always just be hot tanked heads...you just never know! Out of interest were the pistons flat top?

well it matters to me for one. I paid 600+ after a $100 refund for a 196hp curved neck ZE. If I wanted a 165hp DE I would have shopped around here and got one that wasn't used as a pump for the BP oil spill.

So can anyone deff confirm what my ZE actually is. Is it a US 95 or a Jap KL? Cause I'd much prefer 196 hp over 165

KL31-101 KL31-1a1 heads
KL-01 cams
Square intake runners (have confirmed 2000 millenia's+ do use these= awesome as I need 2 before this thursday)
Flat pistons (need to double check as the 2000 millenia's have recessed heads)

I believe it came with a KL-67 TB too if that helps at all

EDIT- Note- square intake runners were on the millenia's since day 1 in 1995 models..not just 2000+. All years have the same part number anyway

Flat top pistons indicates a ZE. Check the plugs, dont know if DE uses the same but ZE uses BKR6E11.
