a used motor from another user wouldn't be that much better.
There are MANY engine importers in Canada, no need to get one from the US. They do offer warranties on them. The reputable shops (like Japan Auto) do charge a premium, but they'll do the motor deinstall/reinstall free of charge if it is defective.

this is how she sounds and runs right now. the smoke clears when it warms up and the motor runs pretty well though still knocks.

AWeeesome. So i guess there isnt a sleeve i can replace to fix that? New head basicly?

Would a kf engine swap in easily? Maybe i should just run this til its dead and hopefully we have another car for her and i can jack it and gut it for a kl then.

:?

a machine shop/head shop can replace a valve guide no problem.

If thats what it is.

so what do i do to check? take off valve cover and wiggle the valve?

still curious if a kf will drop into a k8 car. cheapest motor I have found is a k8ze and kfze for 450 in toronto.

450 for a low K motor would be decent.

you can't really check valve guides without pulling the head.

If it burns a lot of oil at startup, its usually valve guides. The oil pools on top of the valve, and when you start it, it drops in. It burns off all at once, and doesn't leak much once its running.

You could remove the I/M and check the intake valves for oil pools. Thats fairly easy.

Other diagnostic techniques are mainly experience. Knowing exactly what the sound is, etc... that a cam noise will have a 2x faster repeat rate than a bottom end noise...

I might check that out soon then. it does smoke for several minutes and doesn't really stop until it warms up fully.

Thanks for the help so far everyone. I'm not a mechanic by any means. just a hobbyist.
Most complex thing i've done so far is change the clutch on my msp myself.

The woman isn't all the keen on a engine rebuild or spending a bunch of money on repair parts, but is willing to take it to a mechanic just to find out whats wrong with it.
It sucks, cause its in good shape for the most part but smoking so badly, we would be lucky to get 1k for it at sale which seems like a waste =(

ha ha. we actually did that when this one chick was gonna come look at it. turned out to be a flake and never showed up, but called a week later to look at it again, and guess what =D.....

not much interest since.

The more I look at it though, the more im reminded of when i was 15 and wanted one of these pretty bad ha ha. id like to buy this car off her and track slut it with the most bad-a-- kldet swap.
seen a lot of them for sale and even the 94/95 ones are in really crappy shape. this one just has a dent on a quarter panel i can fix, a fresh coat of paint, new struts/tires ect.

Could do it pretty cheaply too. parts for the msp cost a lot and you need a s----ton of money to make any real power on it.
A bpt swap is also a possibility but would take more work.

ah well. ill check for oil pools when i get a chance. it isn't getting driven all that much for now so im sure it will last a while.
