Re: riaa sueing people
Well the govt is allowed to tear down companies such a Microsoft and do what they wish with them, but the RIAA is allowed to sue their own patrons into submission by making the purchase of a $17 cd the only way to get music.
Sueing us into submission. That's extremely unfair, one-sided, and definitely not good marketing if they are trying to get more people to buy records.
By the way, what makes swapping music different than checking out a book at the library? The author doesn't get paid the cost of the book everytime their book is checked out. What makes it any different?

Re: riaa sueing people
in response to the library anology, I think the RIAA would have this to say: The book was bought legitimately by the library, who is allowing their patrons to borrow the book. When you download music off the web, it's more like borrowing the book from the library, scanning the entire book into your computer and then allowing countless others to download the book without at least having in their hands a legitimate copy from the bookstore or the library. I don't think the RIAA is doing the right thing, and I've certainly downloaded some music for myself (hopefully the RIAA doesn't read this
) but this would be the argument that they would use.

Re: riaa sueing people
I heard on the radio in about 3 weeks time they will be lowering CD prices to about $12 hoping that more people will go and buy them. But about the Library comment, someone had to buy the music and put it on the computer, so its the same if you think of it that way. I also heard they are sueing a 12 year old girl in NYC. How fair is that? 12 year old girl is going to pay $150,000 per song? I dont think so.

Re: riaa sueing people
yes someone did have to buy it like the library. But unlike getting it from the library, the intention of the music downloader is to keep the music for as long as they can. If you tried to do that at a library, you get late fines
. Trust me, I know about late fines

Re: riaa sueing people
well i dj on thes side(records not cd's)
& u know i play many other dj's music, & u know i dont have to pay royalties. most dance music produces dont care, to them its about musics DJ dieselboy was one of the first dj's to share his music on napster. & when metalica & other musicians were struggleing, u think they would care if there music was swapped
also i think converting them into a mp3, makes it your property, b/c of the use of third party software,
my problem with pay peer to peer, i dont listen to alot of popular music so why would i want to pay for music i dont like.

but thats my 2 cents,

Re: riaa sueing people
here is my view.
If maybe bands start to not suck and not have just one single I would buy a 20 dollar album. I mean come on, there is so much garbage out there...three days grace...one good song - theory of a dead man....no originality... If there is a good cd, with a majority of good songs I will buy it, until then I will download the singles...

Re: riaa sueing people
Ironically I had a discussion with some co-workers this morning about that.
I told him whys hould I pay $20 for an album that has 12 songs on it and 11 of them suck. I dont pay to listen to the radio when I want, I can tape the radio and replay, but I cant download one good song?
The RIAA can kiss where I sit.

Re: riaa sueing people
I've downloaded in my mp3-lifetime, just enough songs to fix on a single 700mb cd, im pretty picky and a burnt cd in my car i can listen to for months. Ive mp3'd since before i was on the internet, since my BBS days on my 486 and my 14.4 external modem, man, its been about 7 years since ym first mp3, was running winamp v0.3 back than. Most kids will download the world cd collection in few months, i get a few songs a month.
I cant belive that the RIAA is allowed to charge $150'000 per song! Download 1 song and lose the average persons salary for 4-5 years. Its jsut a scam for them to make money. They if anything sahoudl charge like $1- $2 a song a grab the people with several 120gb HDD's full of mp3's, those are the people are they shoudl be going after, not the kiddies that dont know what their doing and taking their college funds that they did with that other kid
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11483
