Carlisle car show reborn!?

Carlisle Events Will Host a Sport
Compact Car Event in 2004
Show has been moved to the
Pennsylvania State Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, PA.

Carlisle Events has announced that it will hold a sport compact car show in the Pennsylvania State Farm Show Complex on May 15-16, 2004. This decision comes after Carlisle Events canceled the Carlisle Custom Compact Nationals held annually at its facility, the Carlisle (Pa.) Fairgrounds. A name for the new event has not yet been determined.
The newly renovated and expanded Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex, located off the Cameron Street exit of I-81 in Harrisburg, houses 26 acres under one roof and has 60 acres of convenient parking available. "We now have about a million square feet of space," said Larry Weaver, the Farm Show Complex event manager. "It's brand new."
"We've secured the entire Farm Show Complex," said John Detrick, CEO of Carlisle Events. Show cars will be located in the newly built Expo Hall as well as all other areas of the complex. The main advantages of holding the show inside the Farm Show Complex are the availability of so much indoor space and the ability to prohibit alcohol, which appeared to lead to many of the disruptions at the Carlisle Custom Compact Nationals in the past few years.
"At the Farm Show building, we will produce an alcohol-free event," Detrick said. "The change of venue allows us to take the measures necessary to actively discourage attendance by those who caused the elimination of the Carlisle Custom Compact Nationals. We refuse to allow the actions of a small minority to eliminate a show that has become the best of its kind in the country." Farm Show management has agreed to forgo the sale of alcohol at Carlisle Events' request.
"The way these ordinary vehicles have been transformed through thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of work is quite remarkable," Detrick said. "This show will be about the appreciation of these vehicles, and all the time, effort, talent and money that has gone into producing them. That is the interest of the true automotive enthusiast and the kind of show that we have produced for nearly 30 years."
Carlisle Events is thrilled to be able to offer this event to keep the automotive hobby alive with the younger generation. "I could not be more pleased to move forward with this event at this venue," Detrick said. "From the day we canceled the Carlisle Custom Compact Nationals, we've maintained our commitment to the youth audience. For us just to eliminate this show - it's essentially throwing the whole generation away because of a small percentage, and that's not fair to anybody.
"Our future is in nurturing the next generation," he continued. "They are the single largest age/demographic group to ever impact the automotive hobby. This demographic is important not only to this business, but to the overall economy."
Both Farm Show and Carlisle Events executives are pleased with the decision to hold the event in Harrisburg and look forward to the turnout. About 3,400 show cars are expected, with hundreds of vendors selling aftermarket accessories.
"This is the first custom compact show that has ever been held at the Farm Show, and we're excited about having it on board," Weaver said. "We'll be reaching a diverse group; that's a plus for us. Another plus is all the economic benefit of the show coming to Harrisburg - hotels, motels, restaurants - bringing money into the area."
Quaker State, the 2003 show's presenting sponsor, and Falken Tire, long-time sponsor at Carlisle, also are delighted with the news that a sport compact car show will continue in Central Pennsylvania. "We're thrilled to partner with Carlisle Events," said James Stone, Quaker State's director of brand marketing. "We have a common goal - to help consumers enjoy ultimate performance out of their vehicles. Carlisle Custom Compact Nationals is a particularly exciting event to be a part of because it focuses on such an exceptional segment of the market."
More details will be available in the future.
