93 1.6 sohc swap to 93 protege 1.8 dohc

Post by 65stang »

I need some insight on how well this would work. I know there is some swap information all the way out there but I couldnt find out exactly which engine I am using because I am dumb. I have a 93 base mx3 5 speed w/ the 1.6l SOHC. I now have posssession of a wrecked 93 protege with a DOHC engine which I believe is the 1.8L variation. I just need some insight into how hard this swap would be to do.

thanks

you're going to get a lot of "search". the basics are easy, details are up to you.

since you have the car, you're in great shape. you need the motor, tranny, axles, jack-shaft, ecu, side tranny mount. it's pretty much a direct swap.

just realized where you were from. there's a guy in moca(mx-3 owners club of atlanta) that has done this swap. post on that board too. he might be able to help you out more than anyone here.

if you only have the engine and not the tranny it;'s such an easy swap
just take out your engine and put in the protege engine
your gonna need the ecu and run 2 wires from the ecu to the vris if you don't have the wirring harness off the protege

So Marlon do u say that u can keep the soch mx-3 harnes if u do the bpd swap, and all u nee to do is get a probe ECU and 2 more wires for the VRIS. My question is will the protege ECU fit on the mx-3 harnes? Do u need any protege engine mounts or so? if u swap only the engine?

yes u can keep the harness, there the same except for those 2 wires
just get the protege ecu and plug it in
u don't need any mounts or anything, just drop it in

if you have the transmission, assuming both cars are manual, it would be better to use the pro lx tranny too. might as well start off with a better setup.

It is a good thing I am getting this new engine. Today the mx3 was turning but not firing. hooray for 95000 miles and needing a tune-up. :froggie_red:
