My Homemade Intake...

Bash it if you will, I just want to get your opinion on this. I know it looks hoaky but it works... no more sucking in hot engine air...<P><A HREF="http://members.shaw.ca/spudsicles/image ... Have you noticed any change in performance? And do you have a filter underneath all that wrap? <P>one

Purty clean job actualy. Seen alot worse. ;) What is that piece you used to cover the filter? An air conditioning duct section? Running it under the car is better than into the wheel well where you get water spray on wet days. Just watch those speed bumps.<BR>Doesn't look any more hokey than the dual intake I did for my '76 GMC Jimmy w. a 350. Used dryer duct, but the hard all aluminum stuff, with two ducts running from the filter housing to the grill just inside of the headlights. Helped my mileage a bit, & at 12 MPG, ANYthing that helps is good.

To answer questions...<P>Yes, I do notice a bit more in performance. It accelerates much smoother than what I had before, which was the filter just sucking in the hot engine air.<BR>There is a filter underneath that aluminum stepdown cylinder looking thing... just a regular S&B/K&N cone filter...<P>Yes that is a piece I found in the ducting isle in Revy here. It's a 7" to 6" cylinder... then with 4" dryer tubing to a 4" dryer vent (fresh air intake thing)...<P>Parts List:<BR>4" dryer vent (the one under the car)<BR>4" heat resistant dryer tubing<BR>6" to 4" ring (which connects the tubing to the cylinder<BR>7" to 6" cylinder (which houses the filter)<BR>7" cap (which I had to cut out a space for the filter to connect to the VAF/MAF thing)... looks like teeth on the end where the filter meet the VAF/MAF thing cause I had to get tin snips to cut...<BR>2 clamps to hold down the tubing and filter...<BR>A couple screws for the dryer vent...<P>I also had to take off the mud guard and cut out a section for the vent to stick through... and then drill holes for the screws...

It looks nice , but I'd be careful with it. I know a guy that had a 1990 Grand Am and the intake was under the car like yours and he ceased the engine going through a big puddle. This sucks water directly up the intake and into your engine!

Exactly...to correct that problem, you might just turn the intake opening under your car around backwards. That'll kinda defeat the "ram-air" gimmick, but any kind of "boost" you make from that wouldn't make it past the air filter anyway.

Hmmm... that sounds like a good idea... here in Vancouver it rains like no tomorrow. Maybe I'll just disconnect the ducting from the vent to the cylinder instead for the winter... have to see how things go...<P>Although it is a 4" vent and 4" tubing... that's a lot of water getting sucked...

did you completely remove the maf sensor or just reposition it ?

I left it where it was... just shoved a cone air filter on the end.
