Re: Ryan's Final Build

I murdered my grey (winter, shitty, rusty, ugly) car the other night.

Drove it top of second gear through the ditch. Fun as balls. But coming back down the gravel road to my bro's house, the RPM started falling all by themselves... and it started sounding horrible.

Slowed down to head down the driveway, and it literally sounded like a bag of sledgehammers. Pushed in the clutch combing to a stop on the driveway and it stopped instantly. Waited 30m and it cranked and started, barely. More sledgehammers. Eased it into the shop, and left it there for the night (suspension swap to summer car).

In the morning, I couldn't get it re-started with two other cars trying to boost it. She's seized solid. It had all its fluids, but at some point the case flow got high enough to back up on the PCV valve and it blew the dipstick out. Still had enough oil, but it tells me the rings as well as the bearings are just scribbled.

Not bad for a mystery KLDE that I got with the car when I bought it. Its neat to think that I may have gone one more winter if it hadn't developed that electrical bug... But I need a reliable car for my real job now....

So the summer KL chassis is pulling its last shift this winter, after which it will be parted out like promised.

Then I need a new winter car.

It's mandatory that all previous MX-3 owners migrate to a Subaru.

This is killing me to say but I have to agree with Kris. WRX or STi. STi being a better base if you plan to race or save a few bucks and go with the WRX almost the same acceleration. Prices on tis site are usually a little high but not always. Subies may be cheaper in your area but I doubt it. https://www.toronto-subaru-club.com/for ... -vehicles/

The car has developed an odd problem.

Every few weeks or so it will have a fit. It will be fine until you go out to start it one morning, and it will idle fine for about 2 minutes, and then start lopeing and die without any throttle input (makes stoplights a problem). There is a VERY narrow band of throttle input that doesn't bog it down. The mileage roughly halves. Its basically unsafe to drive because it takes about 3 miles to get up to highway speed. Also, you can only maintain one speed (whatever you get from the narrow throttle region that doesn't cause it to bog), so its very irritating to drive at the posted limit. I drive it into a garage for once, and then it idles fine and wont do it again. Classic. Makes it hard to troubleshoot. No abnormal codes.

I've switched out the coolant temp sensor and the MAF. The parts are all pretty old though, and I'm not sure if the MAF is any good.

It screams fuel problem to me (ECT or IAT), but I will try replacing the disty anyway. Pretty sure vacuum system is legit, since the problem is very black and white as to whether it happens or not.

Any other suggestions?

How is your fuel pressure?

Is the fuel pump still working good ? Is the pressure in the rails ok?
How about the filter, could it be clogged?
Just another Mx3 freak :)

It hasn't happened since it warmed up a bit.

Also, I replace the O2 sensors for once, and it makes a pretty big difference in drivability (I suspect more so than usual because of the patchwork of components).

Also, I'm down to a record low of 3 codes! Just the EGR ones.

BMW is coming out next weekend, and I suppose I have to start considering pulling her apart...

Sorry to b ring this back 3 months later.. I've been reading your worklog and getting ideas over the last couples a days and idk if you're running straight pipes or what not. To me though, it sounds like a clogged cat which will usually restrict air pressure in the opposite direction dislodging the pintle from the egr and throwing an erroneous egr code (ive had it happen on my ex's car) years ago and the loss of power is also a telltale sign. Just a hunch though you probably aren't even running a cat anymore.

I know I'm not, but now since my base requires me to get a smog test for decals im kinda in a predicament

Hey man, thanks for the input.

In order to have a clogged cat, like you guessed, I'd have to be running a cat. In order for the EGR pint to be dislodged, I'd have to have the EGR installed. We don't have emissions testing in my neck of the woods.

Aside from that, I've parted the car out. Engine is sitting in my brother's garage.

I agree emissions testing is a pain, but I see how its a good idea, it should just be exempt for some degree of modified vehicles.
