Sticky Shifter Cable for Automatic

Hi,

My 1994 MX3, automatic, has been thru many minneapolis winters;

now since it sat for a while, its very hard to move the shifter from park to

any gear. Recently It wouldn't start because the neutral switch wasn't

releasing in the 'park' position. I can only start it while shifted in the neutral position now.

Does my cable need replacement? Can it be lubricated? Is it bent? Seems to shift and

drive fine once I get it into gear.

Cody, just pull the auto tranny crap from my GS man, it starts in P no problemo.

in the column connected to the ignition there is the end of the cable I would try and spray some lube oil or silicone spray down into the cable and work it in and grease everything else that moves with say white lithium. I would do the same to the other end of the shifter. should only take an hour or so to do. If that does not resolve it I would go to the cable from the shifter to the trans.

Okay, I'll give that a go. Sounds like I'll have some spare parts to work with.

There is an adjustment nut on the auto shifter cable, if the shifter wont go all the way into park, the corrosion on the cable might be stopping it from fully engaging. Just tighten up the cable a bit, lube it all and see if it'll start in park, I had the same problem and that fixed it.

I figured it out. On the transmission, below the lever that the cable moves, there is a part held on with two bolts through oblong holes, which has some room for rotation. I loosened the bolts and turned it to where it had been prior to me messing with it during the swap. The car starts every try now. No fighting with the shift selector.
