Another electrical problem with brake pedal

Post by anjin1982 »

So....Tonight when leaving friendly's i noticed when i stepped on my brake with the headlights on my radio basically turn off for a second and my headlights would go off then right back on fast enough so they didn't turn all the way off but slow enough to notice...My check engine or any warning lights never came on..so when i got home i turned off the headlights and left only the parking lights on i stepped and it did it again...once again this time with no parking/headlights i stepped on the brake and the radio went off then back on...any ideas?...ill look into it tomorrow after work...92 rs auto...now for light related mods the only thing i did was put a little piece of black tape on the inner 2 parking lights in the rear so only the outer 2 light up but when the brake is pressed all four light up...and thats it but that was done about 2 weeks ago...radio wise the after-market was installed by me over 5 years ago and recently when i took apart the radio console area i kept getting a short but figured that out and for the past week or so its been fine so...

Sounds like a bad voltage drop, could be either battery or alternator. I would start by checking the voltage

Yeah, the brake bulbs are actually quite a load. 4x 37 watt bulbs plus the ones in the 3rd brake light... A general tune up will do you good too.

Section F1 is the online manuals, check the index to see where 'tune up' starts, I imagine its somewhere in the 70's.... link to manuals is on the front page http://www.mx-3.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

i tested the alternator by disconnecting the negative from the battery and the car ran and checked voltage 14 at terminals now when i stepped on the brake with the volt meter on the cigg lighter (had no one around to help) i maintained 14 but i dont think the mater can notice the drop since its so quick...

an analog meter will register it and they are dirty cheap usually, get an analog voltmeter if you are looking for a cheap way to read it.
