drum to disc conversion??
drum to disc conversion??
after my hand brake quit working and "unsuccessfully" inspecting my rear brakes I took my car to Ken Towery where i was informed that my rear brakes are so f***ed up that they need to replace everything which their price was $450.. Personally i would rather have disc brakes in the rear and was wondering if this is even plausible. any suggestions??
Re: drum to disc conversion??
Off the top of my head:
-hubs
-calipers w/brackets
-brake lines (may as well do all, not sure if 100% required)
-handbrake cables
Not sure if necessary, but:
-GS master cylinder and booster
Personal advice: find an MX-3 GS to take parts from, just take off the rear subframe and you'll have all the necessary parts.

do yourself a favor and follow this advice. its by far the easiest and typically the most cost efficient way of doing it.Personal advice: find an MX-3 GS to take parts from, just take off the rear subframe and you'll have all the necessary parts.

Re: drum to disc conversion??
You should upgrade to the GS master cylinder, booster, and you will also need the proportioning valve. BUT you can run the rear disks off of the RS master cylinder and proportioning valve, you just wont get the full effect as using a GS master cylinder and booster. The 4 wheel disk proteges used the same master cylinder as the RS MX3, same with the 323's. same size anyways so it will work just fine.

Re: drum to disc conversion??
you can get the parts off of a escort gt as well, thats where i got mine.
You need the master cylinder
pro valve
calipers
hubs
and hand brake cables.
Also word from the wise if you do get the parts from a egt the hand brake cables are too long, trust me im still ooking for hand brake cables so i can have that back.

Re: drum to disc conversion??
If you do the swap you dont "need" the master cylinder it is just an extra bit to help with braking. The Pro LX has 4 wheel disk and uses the same master that is in the RS. thought the rear disk brakes are the same size in the Pro LX they use a different pad.

Re: drum to disc conversion??
going off what ive searched and found, and my own swap. Had I know i didnt nee to change out the master i wouldnt have, as far as the ebrake, im pretty sure the escort gt is about five in longer than the mx because when i swapped the exhaust over it was that much too long. I have the cables as tight as they will go and hardly get anythung out of it.

Re: drum to disc conversion??
The escort master cylinder is 15/16 so its the same size as the MX3 GS one.
Also you can upgrade the rear brakes to larger miata rotors as well with your swap.
edit: Rockauto has parking brake cables or I have some used MX3 rust free AZ ones that I was going to use on my car but since they are shorter I cant use them. Let me know if your interested.
