Technically they were ran in an OBDII car, so you'd need to swap the harness and run the ECU/MAF and probably run the OEM coilpacks with that motor to do what you're thinking

Really, it's the harness and the sensors that determine what ECU you're running. It's all interchangeable so you use what you want, have or wish. It's about about the proper ECU+VAF combo together. Of course the newer systems are more advanced and more efficient, theoretically, but for the best for the motor, Megasquirt will give you the top results.

Not sure of your future plans but if the OBD1 ECU and VAF are working for you then stick with it. You could buy window switches to get your VRIS bang on but other than that, Mega Squirt is the way to go for fuel when and if you decide to tackle that. There's plenty of write ups to install it then you'd need to set it up and that I read is your issue.

I know you believe that you understand what you think I said but I'm sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Thanks! :D Glad a few here still think that.

I'm not sure if you'll really benefit from swapping to the new ECU/MAF harness

I know you're saying that MS support over there is pretty much nil over there, but it's worth the time and effort and you get some really good gains with plenty of online support. What I would suggest looking into making a plug-and-play Megasquirt. You can get pre-make kits that use the OEM ECU connection. You could plug it in when you feel like working and tuning it, than swap back to your JE50/KL31 for reliability until you get your MS working 100%. I would say that it's more worth the time and effort than to swap one OEM system for another.
