car stalls when ac turned on

well like the title says, everytime I turn my ac on the car sputters and dies. it is a 93 4 cyl. If I just hve the fan on it is fine but the second I hit the ac button she stalls out.

any ideas as to where I should start looking to fix this.

It could be a lot of things....

Does it run well otherwise? if you turn on the fan, radio, hazards, and defog, does it stall as well?


Did the A/C work a little while ago? It could be your ran your compressor without refrigerant and seized it.

yeah I am with ryan on this if there is excessive drag on the a/c compressor then it will drag the idle down and stall the car. Best bet is to watch it with the splash covers removed see if the clutch turns when you hit the switch.

the ac does work, and blows cold, I tested it little on my wy home from work and when I m running highway speeds and turn on the ac there is minimal hesitation, but if I let it drop to idle it stlls out. I plan to pick up a cn of seafoam tomorrow to run through which should help clean everything out as far as the other isues it is having (uneven idle). will have to see if this helps the issue

well if thats the case then I would be checking the iac valve sounds like is not doing its job under load. Out of curiosity what is the idle at when there is no a/c on?

ok, got the car in the garage nd took a multimeter to it. bttery tests at 13.1 v when engine is running nd all accessories off reads 15.1 v with everything on including ac dropped to 14.29 to 14.42 v. but did not stall, it hesitted bad but did not stall. engine is warm now when it was stalling it was cold, but was idling high (1500) to warm up.

I am more confused now.

BTW, if I am missing a couple of a's I appologize my a key on my keyboard is messed up.

idle is at 800 with ac off jumps to 1250 when warm and ac on

AC on these cars may not have been a great idea.

When I hit the A/C button my idle jumps from 700 to between 12-1400rpm.

mine spikes at 1200 then drops to 800 with a/c on at idle. When was the last tune up on the car and a good check over for any vac leaks kakarot? I would clean the throttlebody and idle air control valve as a precautionary measure anyway if I were you.
