1992 stock v6 shutting off

i have a 92 mx3 with 150000 miles, when it hits 3000 rpm it shuts off like you turned the switch off, it doesnt seam to matter if your driving or in nuetral, ive checked the fuel pump , pressure regulator and fuel filter, the car does not sputter or act like a fuel problem, the car will start and idle all day long, if any one has any pointers it would be much appr

It's your Distributer. Mine did the same thing... MAN IT BAFFLED ME!!

Are the 1992 and 1996 distributors the same?
I replaced the one on my 96, which I'm scrapping, and my 1992 just started the stalling/tach bouncing stuff, same symptoms I had with the 96.

The 96 disty may be different since most 96 cars were OBDII cars. This doesnt mean they WILL be different.. but they COULD be different. I havent seen a 96 V6 disty to give you a better explanation than that.

I can tell you that the 94 would fit but has wires switched around.

Well, I've already agreed to buy a 92 disty for my new 92... and managed to save the virtually new V6 disty off my V6 before sending it to the scrappers ... if anybody is looking for one!

There are definately a few different ditributors, even on the same model year. Make sure you have the same, the firing order may even be different.
1994 GS 5 speed 1.8, fresh black paint, flowmaster muffler & Little smelly pine tree
1993 RS 5 speed SOHC with 89,000 original KMs! (rising fast though).
1994 RS 4 cyl auto- running parts car with 104,000 KMs

isnt it cheaper to do the hei mod? if its the coil, it costs around 80 dllrs at autozone or local parts store with warranty. If its the ignitor, you can also get it replaced or imo do the hei mod.


for some reason.. i bought a new disty.... around 300 back in the day. It blew, got a replacement under warranty.. blew ... got another one that blew and then they stopped replacing it.. did the hei mod and its been fine since.

A 96 will not work on the 92. The three wire plug is wired different. Just for info the 92 has a cam sensor but the 96 dosent so the 96 will not work in earlier models. I'd advise you get the proper disty for your car.

Yup, I found a 92 from a guy on this forum. Car runs fine until it's hot, then it dies at idle. I'm parking it until the disty arrives.
I replaced the one on my 96 last year, and pulled it before I scrapped it.
