I must live in bizzaro land. Since when was anything from mazda cheap?
Would I actually have change for $500 AUD if I got head gaskets, VC gaskets, TB gaskets, all the little seals and whatnot etc? Last time I checked too, they wanted over 200 for a water pump that I get off ebay for like under 100. They want $128 for one tie rod end here....

Your average joe gets nearly 40% markup, from the dealer only.
Employees get 20% markup. The parts alone often cost the dealer more than what you can get off of ebay.
Think of it like this. A dealership is the very bottom of an sales line.
1) The manufacturer makes the product, and must make money off of that. Markup.
2) The distributor gets it before it moves on to a Mazda warehouse or another outlet. Markup.
3a) The warehouse(Mazda Canada) sends it off to a dealer. Markup
3ai) The dealer sells it to you. Markup.
3b) An outlet like Napa gets it, and they sell it to you. Markup.
Another option:
1) Manufacturer makes the product and ships it. Markup.
2) Ebay distributor gets it and ships it to you. Markup and shipping.
Ebay is way more efficient, and cheaper for you, for the same parts. The only difference is, you don't get much of a warrenty, but dealships are theives anyway.
Just know what you're looking for, and which brands look shady. Anything directly from Hong Kong, I would completely refuse.

Re: gasket kit off ebay
I've seen a couple places on ebay called Eristic gaskets, which seem like they're made in USA?
I've also visited Import Performance who list a fairly large range of places who make gasket kits. They seem like performance gasket kits, not sure if anyone has ever used any.
I think for easy stuff you can use ebay things. But for head gaskets and difficult to replace things like that you should use either genuine or high quality aftermarket.
