How much hp do you want? You goals will determine what you need.

i think cheap/reliable is my main goal, im not looking for a 12 second car, but something that is decently quick for a high school student hehe. I guess maybe 50-100 hp gains from the 105sh that the car has stock? or is that in the category of expensive?

If you really only have $1000, I don't think going the turbo route will be the best thing for you. I think it will take a heck of alot more time to learn about turbos than it will to do an engine swap. It all depends on how much money you want to keep throwing into the car. A turbo will make your car faster than a BP, hands down. How many miles are on the engine? Over time the car loses its kick as grounds get old, piston rings wear down, etc, etc, causing the 105 HP to be a bit less. Putting in a newer ~130hp engine will give you 30% more power. If you buy one from a wreckers, you can get it really cheap (~250). If you buy one from an import place, you should be able to get a BP for ~500. The importers will have less mileage on it, and will prob be a better engine. Clutch is around 250-300, depending what you get, you will need your flywheel resurfaced, (50) new fluids (150) new ground wires would be a plus (40) Plugs (20) Timing belt+waterpump (~150). So far thats a little over $1000, but its getting good stuff, and doing it the right way. If you do this, and decide to turbo later, another $1500-2000 and you will be making quite a bit of HP.

how hard is the bp swap to do in a 94 manual dohc ? ive read that its alot easier in sohc engines and that the mounts are different and harness, anyone with first hand knowledge or good info that can help take the weight off my shoulders as to if it will be extremely hard for me?

how well do you think the b6 mx-3 version will take to boost? the miata has stronger rods and a lower compression and the 323 b6t is great too, and i didnt think the mx-3 dohc\'s had the oil squirters, that was miata only on the b6-ze?
