my car runs very rough at low rpm levels at about 3500 it sounds better and runs better

could be a lot of things, you need to be more descriptive.

check the ribbed intake hose for cracks (especially between the ribs).

When is the last time the car had a tune up or plug wires changed out?

It could very well be the oxygen sensor as it affects the rpm up to 3 k or so.
95 RS so far just a paintjob, rims suspension next then turbo...

no rips in the intake have changed the pluggs about three weeks ago but not wires. i can be going down the road and push in the clutch and it sounds fine but when i let off it sounds like !@## till about 3000 rpm i dont know how else to descibe it. it started about 2 days after i changed thermostat but it doesnt run hot or anything so i dont think that is it

There can be a lot of problems that can cause symptoms like this. First thing I would check is plugs/rotor/wire and the fuel system. If the motor was over heated at one point I would do a compression test as well.

i did a compression test cyclinders 1 and 2 are bad but have been for while what is the right compression for 1.6 dohc

If two are bad that could very well be your problem, its hard to say wihtout the car in front of me. What was the numbers it scored?

1 was 115 2 was 75 3 and 4 were150
