Where is my coil?

Post by boniclyd »

I replaced my distributor and set the timing and the car idle abnormal and smoked a little. It was driable but it was pinging loudly.
Then the next day I let it idle for 10 minutes and went to back out and it died and hasen't started since. I was going to try the coil next.
Any clue where it is? It was a remanufactured dist. so it might be that.
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT. THANKS
:D

OK I thought it might be because when I looked on the online manaul
it pointed to the distributor for the coil.
Adacne is where I got the new dist. I just installed.
They ordered me a new coil (supposed to be in today)
They said is was separate from dist.
What do they know. OK so what do I do now.
Do I have a faulty dist?
???????? HELP It wont crank.
Im not getting spark at any of the plug wires.
THANKS

If you have SOHC (92-93) model - the coil is external. If you have DOHC (94-96) model the coil is inside the disty. The online manual is for 95 (DOHC) model.
Also you have to put the ecu in diag mode before setting timing or idle.

i had that same problem. i took off my disty and put it back on (i was replacing a gasket) and a while after like a couple days or more the car died and didnt start again, i could turn the key and it would just sound like it was trying to start. then i took off the battery for a day or two and the starter and all that stuff, put it all back together then it started again.

I have a 94 DOHC MX-3 (B6) 1.6 Liter 4CYL.
It was diagnosed with a bad distributor by a reapir shop.
I reaplced the bad dist. with a remanufactured one and it started up just fine, but smoked and pinged. I thought I set the timing, but I can see two small marks on the harmonic balancer. I don't know what mark is the right one.
I finally convinced the part store that the coil was in the dist.
(AFTER YOUR REPLIES, THANKS AGAIN.)
The are ordering me another dist. Should be here tommorrow.
Once I get the dist on and ready to crank it up, how should I go about setting the timing. STEP BY STEP.
ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.
I AM TRYING TO DO THIS MYSELF,
NOT AS EASY AS MY 70 MUSTANG. :!:

um, im gonna say its NOT an HLA. firstly you have one HLA for each valve, and i have a problem thinking that so many would be broke to not alow the car to start.

Thank you for the timing instructions. I was using the one from replacing the disty and it was not near as detailed as this one. I needed to know abou the two marks. It did not mention that on the other set of instructions.
Here is another crazy question? The firing order shown on the online manaul is #1 top left #2 top right and #3bottom left and #4 bottoms right on the cap. Is this correct? Because I'm pretty sure mine is #1 top right #2 bottom right #3 top left and #4 bottom left. My cap even has #1 marked at top right.
Also is it #1 #2 #3 #4 from left to right on the cylinders on the engine.

THANKS FOR EVERYONE's HELP

The online manual is wrong on that one - basically the way you have it now is the correct order. In North America no.1 cylinder is the passenger side and no.4 cylinder is in the driver side.

Thanks for everyone's help.
I returned the disty today and changed it out with a new one.
I cranked right up no problem. I bypassed the CPU.
I marked the pully with chalk and set the timing.
THen set the idle. It is running great. It had a little noise at first then smoothed out after ten minutes of driving.
NO SMOKING OR PINGING.
THANKS AGAIN TO ALL YOU GUYS FOR THE HELP.
:P
