torque question

I finally bought a torque wrench today for my engine build. The minimum torque on the wrench is 20 ft/lbs. I was looking over the torque specs on the kl and alot of them seems to be around the 14-18 ft/lb range. Maybe this question will show my inexperience, but do i need to worry about over torqueing a bolt by a few ft/lbs?? Or should i return it for one that has a minimum torque of 10, but wont give me a high enough torque for things like crank sprocket and such. But since they are so high it pretty much just means as tight as i can get it anyways.

Guess i get to answer this.

14-18 ft/lbs is pretty much hand tight, more on the rocker covers.

A decent hand tight on a wrench is in the range of 50 Ft/lbs.

its a common sense thing, for low tourque items i use a 6" ratchet driver
either a 1/4 set or 3/8 set.

50lbs above 1/2 set.

So you are saying a torque wrench is not necessarily needed, because of the degrees of turn past had tight that is specified in the online manual???

Excuse me, but really some of you need to go back to school and
learn how to read english and conprehend.

I did not say a tourque wrench was not nessary.

Degree torquing, when it states torque to lets say 90Ft/lbs then turn
the bolt another 90 degrees is for when you can't access said bolt after
a engine has been reasembled.

I don't like it never have. some peaple say its about thread stretch
removal.

Also note torqing up a dry bolt verses a lube one not the same at all.

Head bolts are a primary example, you build the engine cold.
run the engine up to operating temperature and then retorque.
old school sure, but the old boys knew stuff.

woah woah woah kiwi chill LOL obiously he is asking because he does not know.. no need for smart answers.. the poor guy is asking a simple question..

as to the other dude.. i rarely use a torque wrench. Only when i remove the heads or something major. After a while you will notice hand tight or even with a braker bar everything should be fine. Just dont go about breaking bolts! lol

you gotta use search man or else you will get yelled ..for some reason people here are obsessed with correct spelling and stuff like that. The way i see it.. its just a simple forum.. its not work.. its not school..screw it right?
