Code 4

I was getting Code 4 ('NE1' camshaft/crankshaft position ) and I replaced the cap and rotor on the distributor and it went away. It has been a few days now and the code has returned. What are all the possible causes of this code?

I thought the crank shaft pos sensor was on the other side of the block, right where the oil dipstick tube goes in next to teh oil pan.
