If i'm not mistaken the valves aren't opening all the way when the lifters are ticking. Correct?

Yes that is correct! but the distance we are talking about is 0.002" to 0.004" pubic hairs really!!

The Hp loss is like nothing

are you serious?? cuz right after it was done, i felt a massive gain in power! like it was way more responsive, like it shoulda been. that $300 included gaskets and stuff, but still you're saying that they dont need to be adjusted after a lotta miles??
Have the cam's of your car been put back in factory postion or are they
advanced, since the K8 family is a non interferance motor you can play
with the cam positon all day long and not hit a piston.

I would attribute the increase in backside feel of hp to this more than
reshiming of the vavle train..

So you think he has solid lifters. Mazda changed the KL in N America to solid lifters in 1998. If the date is the same for the KLZE, only engines seven years old and less will have them.

Is there any way of knowing without lifting a valve cover?
Re-shaped and re-sized gearshift lever. Best driveability mod you can do!
Extra thick soundproofing in the boot (trunk) to quieten my stainless steel exhaust system :)

sorry, hadn't been checking the board much at all lately since I'm on break & on 26.4k dial-up :(

One of the reasons the redesigned 626 had a higher power rating than the old one is b/c of the solid lifters they installed in the 3rd gen models. I was reading a bit about it on probetalk, and apparently the fact they are solid = less moving parts (plungers move & can vary the height of the lifter as the cam turns).

As for installing them...its a bit of a pain in the a--. Mostly b/c you have to remove the cams and its easy to snap them in half if you don't remove the nuts slowly & in proper sequence. Also reinstalling the friciton gears at the exact angle is a bit tricky.

I did my solid lifter swap b/c I already knew I was gonna remove my cams to redo the friction gear spring (FGS) which is another reason the KL / K8 makes horrendous noise. the FGS issue was recalled back in the late 90's by mazda and a revised FGS & locknut was released. I got the revised stuff (have lil notches on them to prevent them from spinning). I should have a super-quiet valvetrain & engine when Its finally installed in my car.

And I priced the lifters at my local dealer & online at mazda motorsports. The tappets (just the lifter part w/out shim) cost about $22 each from my dealer & $14.xx from MMS. The shims cost 12 each from the dealer & $9 from MMS.

and FYI, I have a spare set of solid lifters for anyone who cares, used of course. I collected a few sets at the yard when I lucked out and saw a millenia S and a 98 626 on the same day w/untouched valvetrains. I'll sell em if anyone wants to do the swap.

You're a bastard! :x How do you find all these cars? You must live in the mecca of pick-a-parts or something. I need to get motor mounts for my 2000 626 I4, and can't find one. Even lurking on the 626 forum for 3 months waiting for them and the only guy to part his car didn't want to pull mounts. :?

are you farkin serious? Those 626's are so damn common, omg.

if it weren't a pita for me to pull those mounts, I would, but it is :(.

I get all kinds of awesome crap from my local yards......like millenia S injectors (2 sets), millenia curved neck manifold & tb for $40 together.... I just got finished installing a full ZX2 SR tokico/eibach spring / kyb strutmount combo I pulled from a wrecked SR. I also got its transmission for $75 which included solid motor mounts from energy suspension that *might* fit the MX3 GS (still have to test fit) and updated sycnrhonizers that don't wear out. I already pulled the guts of the trans & they look mint. Oh ya, last week I got some escort sideskirts that will fit the MX3 if you cut 1" off them.

yes i am a bastard.

Well, I called one today that said they won't sell me the mounts seperate, then I asked about the kickpanel trim panels since I need a set of those also, and he was like $20 each. I told him go screw himself, I could build my own trim panels for that much for Christ sakes. :x
