well unless i can find a smaller steering wheel with an air bag i can't do that cause it's aparently illegal.. i did however find out many higher end sports cars automatically shut off the steering assist at higher speeds... this weekend i'm going to yank the belt on the power steering and drive for a few hours with it off and see how it feels

I have been pulled over about 7 times in my current car with the air bags removed and never given any form of flack about it =]

A lot of it just depends on the officer though. That and the driver...

Nah =]

The only problem with removeing them is when other safety gear is designed to work with them.

If you think the road feel sucks already, then something is wrong with your PS system. The MX-3 is one of few cars in its time with variable assist power steering. At a stop or below 25mph, the steering system does its work, but still gives you PLENTY of feel. It isn't like a toyota which lets you use your pinky to spin the wheel lock-to-lock.

Above 25mph the power steering completely disengages, giving you total road feel. The steering is speed-sensitive.

But if you don't give a rats a$$, you can get a manual steering rack from a 323 or ford escort and it bolts right up. You won't save much of any room under there though. The best way to remove the power steering pump is to just take it out and run the two power steering lines back into each other on your existing rack. My friend with a protege did this and it steers smooth as hell...just be sure there is still ATF inside of the rack if you do this so it stays lubricated.

i knew they were basically the same thing but atf is a little stronger , i was told to switch the two so that at high speeds the fluid wouldn't become too viscous and cause a lot of lag

Now what about the V6? Its power steering belt is connected to the water pump. How can you bypass it? I'm not taking my power steering out for any power gains. Just cause my PS system is leaking really really bad and i've driven around without any fluid for about a week now.... So the pump is prolly shot. I just need to know how to run a belt to the water pump. I've heard on Probe Talk you can use a water pump pulley from a probe 2.0 four banger and drill out new holes and it will line up with the belt for the alternator and A/C. Anyone done this? And Gro Harlem you say a manual rack from a escort or protege will drop in? How hard would that be with the engine in?
